So what gives? Why don\u2019t the ultra-wealthy just call it quits and ride off into a golden sunset of early retirement?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that surprises most people is that having money rarely makes someone want to stop working \u2014 it usually does the opposite,\u201d said Andrew Lokenauth, money expert and owner of BeFluentInFinance<\/a> with experience working with high-net-worth clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my clients built and sold a company in his early 50s<\/a> and had more than enough to retire. But three months into retirement, he told me it felt like he lost his rhythm,\u201d Heerlein said.<\/p>\n

The client wasn\u2019t bored; he just missed having something meaningful to push toward. Now, he consults part time, not for the paycheck, but to keep solving problems, mentoring younger founders and staying mentally sharp.<\/p>\n

Lokenauth similarly agreed, adding, \u201c[They] love the game, the challenge, the thrill of building something. Money\u2019s just how we keep score.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wealth Creates More Opportunities That Are Hard To Walk Away From<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s something most people don\u2019t realize, said Lokenauth \u2014 wealth often creates more opportunities that are hard to walk away from.<\/p>\n

Last March, he had the chance to invest in an exciting startup because of his network and expertise.\u00a0\u201cSure, I could\u2019ve been sipping margaritas on a beach instead of doing due diligence, but I\u2019d have missed out on both the intellectual challenge and the potential returns<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Status and Identity Play a Huge Role, Too<\/p>\n

Lokenauth sees this with many of his clients. When you\u2019re known as the person who builds successful companies or makes smart investments, he said that becomes part of who you are<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not about ego \u2014 ok, maybe a little. It\u2019s about maintaining the relationships and influence you\u2019ve built over years,\u201d Lokenauth noted.<\/p>\n
