BirminghamLive)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Birmingham is still unable to confirm when fountains in a flagship city centre space will be back in action as the city experiences for scorching weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The water features in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-centre\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Centenary Square<\/a> has not been in use since October 2023 when they were switched off to facilitate the Ice Skate <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The square was described by one councillor as a \u201cworld-class public space\u201d when its city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the fountains, an iconic feature of the landmark square, have now been switched off for more than a year-and-a-half and still require repairs as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-weather\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">summer<\/a> begins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ahead of a full <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-council\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">council<\/a> meeting this week, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/conservative-party\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative<\/a> councillor Deirdre Alden asked: \u201cWhen does the council expect the water feature in Centenary Square to actually feature water again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> -run council did not provide a date in their response but said work was being undertaken to identify \u201cnecessary repairs\u201d for the fountain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe will undertake those repairs and then complete a further review to ensure the fountain is functional,\u201d they continued.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/0_JS222964549.jpg\" alt=\"Birmingham Centenary Square fountains at night\" be operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A spokesperson for the council provided an update on the fountains last month but did not say when the fountains could be switched back on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cCurrently there is Section 151 [finance] spend approvals process in progress,\u201d they told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/authors\/alexander-brock\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Local Democracy Reporting Service<\/a> in May. \u201cAfter which, it is expected the fountain will be serviced and brought back into operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Numerous residents are keen to see the water flowing once more in Centenary Square, with Bernard Carroll telling the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/authors\/alexander-brock\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">LDRS<\/a> recently: &#8220;I do a lot of filming around <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-centre\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham city centre<\/a> and I have spoken to many families who are very upset about this fountain not being on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They would meet up with other people and their children would have the most wonderful time there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;They would tell me it is so important to them in these very difficult times because it doesn&#8217;t cost anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ having.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is not a trivial thing &#8211; I honestly believe this is very important for the beautiful people of Birmingham in this beautiful city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">One reader added last month: \u201cAny city worth its salt should be providing public spaces for the population to enjoy free of charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cLoved the fountains,\u201d another said. \u201cSomewhere free to go in the city centre and cool off!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe don\u2019t have a city centre park with shade so the fountains were a godsend!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Birmingham
