{"id":194639,"date":"2025-06-18T14:45:19","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T14:45:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/194639\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T14:45:19","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T14:45:19","slug":"sting-slams-brexit-as-an-act-of-folly-during-french-tv-appearance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/194639\/","title":{"rendered":"Sting slams Brexit as an &#8216;act of folly&#8217; during French TV appearance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sting has slammed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/tag\/brexit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> as an \u201cact of folly\u201d during an interview on French television. <\/p>\n<p>The Police frontman, real name Gordon Sumner, was speaking to Laurent Delahousse on France 2\u2019s news show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france.tv\/france-2\/20h30-le-dimanche\/7213370-sting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20h30 Le Dimanche<\/a> when he was asked about Brexit. <\/p>\n<p>Delahousse told the singer that the UK no longer being part of the European Union was \u201cdifficult from our side of the Channel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelondoneconomic.com\/politics\/gibraltar-chief-minister-fact-checks-pro-brexit-media-following-eu-deal-394294\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gibraltar chief minister fact-checks pro-Brexit media following EU deal<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When he asked Sting if it had been less difficult to come to terms with on the British side, he responded: \u201cIt was an act of folly and we are only beginning to understand how stupid it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sting went on to say that he had voted remain in the 2016 referendum and would like to see the UK return to the EU. <\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI am a European. We are the largest economic community in the world, we need to stay together. We are threatened by Russia, maybe by America \u2013 we need to stay united.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Brexit was an act of folly. Back in 2021, he labelled it a \u201cpersonal tragedy,\u201d saying that Brits \u201cknew it was going to be a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told AFP: \u201cYoung British people have been robbed of the opportunity to experience Europe. It\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sting signed a petition in 2019 calling for parliament to revoke the Article 50 letter notifying the EU of Britain\u2019s intention to leave the bloc. <\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2019-03-27\/sting-speaks-on-brexit-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> at the time he predicted Brexit would be a \u201cdisaster\u201d for the UK, adding: \u201cI\u2019m a very patriotic Englishman, British man, and I want us to be part of Europe.
