{"id":195409,"date":"2025-06-18T21:30:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T21:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/195409\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T21:30:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T21:30:10","slug":"revealed-the-astonishing-greenhouse-gas-emissions-that-will-result-from-the-north-west-shelf-project-western-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/195409\/","title":{"rendered":"Revealed: the astonishing greenhouse gas emissions that will result from the North West Shelf project | Western Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Woodside\u2019s North West Shelf gas project on the Burrup peninsula in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/western-australia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Australia<\/a> is one of the world\u2019s largest liquified natural gas ventures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In May the Labor government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/may\/28\/labor-approves-extension-of-woodsides-contentious-north-west-shelf-gas-development\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved an extension<\/a> for the project to run for an additional 40 years, from 2030 to 2070.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The extension is expected to be responsible for about 87.9m tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent every year in the decades ahead, after the gas has been exported and burned, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.wa.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/EPA_Report\/EPA%20Report%201727%20-%20North%20West%20Shelf%20Extension%20Project%20-%20assessment%20report.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Woodside\u2019s own numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Despite the North West Shelf contributing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/jun\/01\/north-west-shelf-gas-extension-australia-lng-woodside-project-little-rent-tax\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201calmost nothing\u201d<\/a> in terms of Australian tax dollars, it will be responsible for emissions greater than dozens of countries and many of the world\u2019s biggest companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">It can be hard to get your head around numbers this big.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">This chart represents 87.9m tonnes of emissions (measured in carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2-e).
