{"id":195512,"date":"2025-06-18T22:23:10","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T22:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/195512\/"},"modified":"2025-06-18T22:23:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T22:23:10","slug":"france-selects-saab-globaleye-to-replace-e-3f-awacs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/195512\/","title":{"rendered":"France Selects Saab GlobalEye to Replace E-3F AWACS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The joint declaration of intent includes two GlobalEyes and an option for two additional aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>After a year of <a href=\"https:\/\/meta-defense.fr\/2024\/01\/30\/saab-globaleye-visite-macron-suede\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speculation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aerotime.aero\/articles\/france-saab-globaleye-acquisition-awacs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> about France having chosen Saab\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2025\/04\/15\/saab-gripen-peru-globaleye-denmark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GlobalEye AEW&amp;C<\/a> (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft to replace the older E-3F Sentry AWACS, Paris and Stockholm\u2019s defense ministers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/sites\/default\/files\/ministere-armees\/18.06.2025%20Press%20release%20France%20and%20Sweden%20strengthen%20armaments%20cooperation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> a letter of intent (LOI) on Jun. 18, 2025 at the ongoing Paris Air Show for acquiring two units of the platform. With an option for two more included, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saab.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2025\/france-announces-intention-to-procure-globaleye-from-saab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saab<\/a> and France\u2019s Direction g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019armement (DGA) specified this is not a final contract.<\/p>\n<p>A LOI was also signed between the DGA and MBDA for the latter\u2019s Akeron MP anti-tank guided missile. The other operators of the type, including the U.S. Air Force and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), are also looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2023\/11\/15\/nato-selects-e-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replace the aging platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Letter of Intent <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While mentioning that the joint declaration of intent also includes an option for two additional aircraft, Saab clarified that the \u201cparties have not yet entered into a contract and Saab has not yet received an order for GlobalEye from France.\u201d In fact, a final notification process and a contract will follow in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>The French defense procurement body, the Direction g\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l\u2019armement (DGA), called the overall agreements signed by Lecornu and Johansson as a \u201croadmap\u201d for \u201cstrengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of armaments.\u201d It then listed the GlobalEye from Saab and the Akeron MP anti-tank missile from MBDA covered under the letter of intent.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">Le su\u00e9dois Saab et la DGA signent une d\u00e9claration d\u2019intention sur l\u2019achat par la France de deux avions d\u2019alerte et contr\u00f4le (AEW&amp;C) GlobalEye, plus deux en option. Contrat finalis\u00e9 ces prochains mois par la DGA, selon Saab <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PShUqotxxT\">pic.twitter.com\/PShUqotxxT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vincent Lamigeon (@VincentLamigeon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VincentLamigeon\/status\/1935368242304008512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">June 18, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beside the \u201cair surveillance\u201d and an \u201canti-tank missile framework,\u201d the DGA said the \u201ccooperation\u201d is also about \u201cthe Meteor missile, medium-range (Aster missile) and short-range air defense, the defence and intervention frigate as a candidate system for the Swedish next-generation surface ship program, innovation, as well as the security of ammunition and explosive supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saab\u2019s president and CEO Micael Johansson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saab.com\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2025\/france-announces-intention-to-procure-globaleye-from-saab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in the company\u2019s statement that the GlobalEye AEW&amp;C \u201cwill enhance the French Armed Forces\u2019 situational awareness and threat detection across the air, land and sea domains.\u201d He further added \u201cOur solution will enable France to maintain full sovereign control of its airborne early warning and control capability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saab GlobalEye<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The company describes GlobalEye as an \u201cadvanced multi-domain AEW&amp;C aircraft\u201d carrying an \u201carray of active and passive sensors,\u201d which provides \u201clong-range detection and identification of objects in the air, at sea and over land.\u201d Additionally, \u201cby providing real-time information to air forces, armies and navies, GlobalEye enables enhanced situational awareness of the surrounding areas and early detection of threats,\u201d Saab said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/France-Sweden-Saab-GlobalEye-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-97737\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"397\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/France-Sweden-Saab-GlobalEye-2-706x397.jpg\"\/><\/a>File picture of a GlobalEye AEW&amp;C aircraft. (Image credit: Saab)<\/p>\n<p>The DGA, meanwhile, said the GlobalEye \u201crepresents a new airborne capability for surveillance, air traffic control and command and control (C2) of air operations.\u201d The statement further added \u201cIt is capable of operating in a degraded\/contested environment, in a multinational and inter-allied framework. It allows for a very rapid response to the operational needs of the Air and Space Force without causing a capability gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saab\u2019s S 106 GlobalEye AEW&amp;C aircraft is derived from the company\u2019s Erieye airborne radar system carried on the <a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationist.com\/2024\/05\/29\/ukraine-to-get-swedish-awacs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saab 340 AEW<\/a>, Saab 2000 AEW, and Embraer E-99 aerial platforms. In the case of GlobalEye, Erieye is installed on the Canadian-made Bombardier Global 6000\/6500 aircraft family, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saab.com\/products\/globaleye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saab<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>The Erieye is based around the PS-890 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, mounted on a distinctive \u2018plank\u2019 above the carrier aircraft\u2019s fuselage. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120616115721\/http:\/articles.janes.com\/articles\/Janes-Avionics\/Erieye-AEW-C-Airborne-Early-Warning--Control-mission-system-radar-Sweden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jane\u2019s<\/a>, it enables a detection range of up to 450 km for fighter-sized aircraft, depending on altitude and the radar cross section.<\/p>\n<p>Along with AEW&amp;C capability, the upgraded Erieye ER system offers maritime surveillance with a Leonardo SeaSpray 7500E radar, assisted by a FLIR Systems Star Safire 380-HD EO\/IR turret. The company\u2019s chief \u00c9ric Trappier pushed the domestic option in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assemblee-nationale.fr\/dyn\/actualites-accueil-hub\/europe-de-la-defense-et-cooperations-europeennes-audition-du-pdg-de-dassault-aviation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hearing<\/a> before the country\u2019s lawmakers in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.assemblee-nationale.fr\/recherche\/resultats_recherche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Assembly<\/a>. These reports also followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/bizjetsofwar.substack.com\/p\/saabs-globaleye-jet-visits-france\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit of a GlobalEye in France<\/a> in April 2024, flying for five days from Mont-de-Marsan Air Base (BA118).<\/p>\n<p>The base is home of the Centre d\u2019Expertise A\u00e9rienne Militaire (CEAM), which develops and tests new and\/or upgraded systems for the French Air and Space Force.
