Police initially urged motorists to steer clear of Templemore Road in Galliagh, after reports of fires near the roundabout shortly before 8pm.<\/p>\n
Later, plastic barricades were set ablaze on Glengalliagh Road, near the Leafair Wellbeing Centre.<\/p>\n
In a subsequent update, police confirmed that tires and a traffic light had also been set on fire.<\/p>\n
This is the third consecutive night of violence in the area. <\/p>\n
Eight teenage boys were among those arrested following Tuesday, during what the Chief Constable described as \u201cblatant sectarian violence\u201d in Derry.<\/p>\n
Residents living near the scene of the unrest have voiced fears that someone \u2013 particularly a young person \u2013 could be seriously injured or even killed if the violence continues.<\/p>\n
Tuesday\u2019s chaotic scenes erupted at Nailors Row, near the city\u2019s historic walls.<\/p>\n
During the disorder, 14 police officers were injured as rioters threw petrol bombs, fireworks, large pieces of masonry, planks of wood, and bricks at police lines.<\/p>\n
Police responded by firing a single plastic baton round.<\/p>\n
In total, 11 people were arrested: eight boys aged between 14 and 17, and three men aged 29, 30, and 47.<\/p>\n
The teenagers, along with the two younger men, were arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour. The 47-year-old man was detained on suspicion of intentionally encouraging or assisting a riot.<\/p>\n
Violence persisted from around 7.30pm to 1am on Tuesday night during which one rubber bullet was fired by the PSNI.<\/p>\n
The road where it occurred runs adjacent to Alexander House, sheltered accommodation for older people, and close to the Bishop Street and Fountain interface.<\/p>\n
Chief Constable Jon Boutcher condemned the violence \u201cin the strongest terms possible\u201d.<\/p>\n
“This was blatant sectarian violence, plain and simple, and there is absolutely no justification for it in our society. These behaviours are criminal plain and simple, we will not accept them and will pursue those responsible with the full force of the law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
