{"id":19596,"date":"2025-04-14T16:07:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T16:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/19596\/"},"modified":"2025-04-14T16:07:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T16:07:10","slug":"tourists-avoiding-spains-beach-resorts-as-british-visitors-face-summer-of-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/19596\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourists avoiding Spain&#8217;s beach resorts as British visitors face summer of protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tourists in Spain are increasingly turning away from popular \u201csun and seaside\u201d resorts, a Spanish government source has told The i Paper, as <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/spain-protest-overtourism-mallorca-uk-holidays-3626098?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Britons face a summer of anti-visitor protests<\/a> across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Spending surveys show that tourists spend more money in rural destinations in the months outside the high season.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday resorts such as the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands, the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, remain popular, but tourists are increasingly looking<a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/we-cant-stand-brit-filled-costa-del-sol-bought-home-real-spain-3586154?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> for hidden Spain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/spain?srsltid=AfmBOorl1PdVtwdWgy3bT47bitenUnd5dnFWA8CHk2sPnnlL4JfewwAZ&amp;ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spain<\/a> is trying to balance the popularity of its <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/tourism-leading-spains-economic-boom-3539694?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">booming tourism sector<\/a>, which accounts for about 12 per cent of GDP, with growing anger over a housing crisis, which protesters blame on the increasing number of tourist flats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing recently \u2013 and this, for example, is data from an American [credit] card company on card spending to see where spending is happening. It shows that spending is growing, especially in the months outside the summer months, what they call the shoulder months, before and after the summer months,\u201d said a source at the Spanish Economy Ministry.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_205590976.jpg\" alt=\"Skyscrapers lined up on the seafront of Benidorm, a very popular tourist destination on the Costa Blanca\" class=\"wp-image-3070177\"  \/>A beach in Benidorm on the Costa Blanca, which is still popular with tourists (Photo: Orietta Gaspari\/ Getty)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it is also growing in a dispersed way outside the sol y playa [sun and beach] resorts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With more tourists travelling to lesser-known destinations, it will relieve pressure on the Balearic and Canary Islands and cities like <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/brits-stag-dos-barcelona-antitourist-protests-3597890?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona<\/a> or Malaga, where <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/anti-tourism-protest-canary-islands-housing-environmental-impact-3335046?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests were staged last year<\/a>, the government source said during a briefing for foreign journalists on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Patrick Millar, of city break specialists Kirker Holidays, said there had been a surge in bookings in smaller destinations away from the tourist trail this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most dramatic increases are in Madrid, where we have seen a 66 per cent increase this year and Bilbao [in the Basque Country], where bookings have more than tripled compared to a year ago.
