Among the talent talking to press on the blood-stained carpet was the film\u2019s stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/aaron-taylor-johnson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_aaron-taylor-johnson_1\" data-tag=\"aaron-taylor-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron Taylor-Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jodie-comer\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jodie-comer_1\" data-tag=\"jodie-comer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jodie Comer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ralph-fiennes\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ralph-fiennes_1\" data-tag=\"ralph-fiennes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ralph Fiennes<\/a> and young newcomer Alfie Williams, as well as director Boyle and writer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/alex-garland\/\" id=\"auto-tag_alex-garland_1\" data-tag=\"alex-garland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Garland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt\u2019s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA small community living off the coast of Northumbria, Britain, is connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. Tough-guy Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) has raised his 12-year-old son, Spike (Williams) with the mettle to send an arrow through an infected\u2019s neck if needs be. But when Spike learns there might be someone beyond the island who can help his ailing mother (Comer), he risks everything to find them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cBecause 23 years had passed, it felt like we could be take real risks with it,\u201d Boyle told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet about his new film. \u201cAnd our ambition was to try and make as an original a film as the first one when it came out\u2026 The upgrades on the infected are a privilege to film and to witness.\u201d He smiled, \u201cI think people will enjoy the upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tComer told THR she was surprised by how moved she was by the zombie flick. \u201cIt\u2019s horror, but I was struck by how moved I was. There was so much levity. The script felt so rich and also really at the centre of it is this family dynamic, this relationship between mother and son, which is not your usual relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIt was amazing to be led by Danny,\u201d she continued. \u201cSelfishly, to work with Danny Boyle.. I\u2019m never going to shoot a film like this. It\u2019s been the most incredible experience,\u201d she added, before gushing over a 14-year-old Williams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWilliams said of being on a Danny Boyle set: \u201cHe\u2019s just so creative and unique, experimental. But he\u2019s a really nice person.\u201d On getting advice from seasoned pros like Comer, Taylor-Johnson and Fiennes, the young actor responded: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t anything specific. I could just watch them. I could adopt and mimic them and just watching them get ready before I see the different techniques they use, the energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Columbia Pictures movie is a follow-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/cillian-murphy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cillian-murphy_1\" data-tag=\"cillian-murphy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cillian Murphy<\/a>-starring 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007).<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Cillian-Murphy-28-Days-Later-Everett-H-2024.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"730\" width=\"1296\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tCillian Murphy as Jim in 28 Days Later (2002).<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy Everett Collection<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe next installment, Nia DaCosta\u2019s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is set for a 2026 release and will see Murphy reprise his role as Jim, a survivor of the original outbreak. The Irishman serves as an executive producer on both features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBoyle said the third film in the trilogy will depend on how well, financially, 28 Years Later does. \u201cThe third one really depends on how we do with this film,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously it\u2019s very, very British film. Everybody is British and all the locations are British and it\u2019s an entirely British affirm. It\u2019s British filmmaking at its most pure. So how it does internationally will influence whether we get the money for the third one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman beamed with pride, confirming what Boyle had just said. \u201cThe audience will tell us. I won\u2019t even have to make that decision,\u201d he said of the third film. \u201cI\u2019m very, very optimistic. I\u2019m knocking on wood. We\u2019ve already made the next one. And that\u2019s quite unusual. We had a high level of confidence with the folks making the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis is Rothman and Boyle\u2019s ninth film together. On how the Englishman, famed for 1996 hit Trainspotting, has changed as a director over the decades, Rothman interjected: \u201cThat\u2019s a genius question. He hasn\u2019t changed one iota. I\u2019ve gotten old \u2014\u00a0he is still young and enthusiastic. He\u2019s still breaking the form. He\u2019s as dynamic as he was all those years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the premiere, THR was also briefly able to catch up with Ralph Fiennes on being cast as President Snow, a role previously played by the late Donald Sutherland, in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m really thrilled,\u201d Fiennes said about being cast in the film, set to be adapted from Suzanne Collins\u2019 novel of the same name. \u201cLook, I\u2019m a Donald Sutherland fan. I\u2019m not going to try and be Donald Sutherland, because no one can be him.
