It became a federal holiday in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/16\/when-is-juneteenth-2025\/84226338007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/16\/when-is-juneteenth-2025\/84226338007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juneteenth<\/a> is this Thursday, which means many government offices around the U.S. will be impacted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2025\/06\/16\/when-is-juneteenth-2025\/84226338007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America&#8217;s youngest federal holiday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many departments at the local, state and federal levels will shutter their offices on Thursday, June 19 in observance of the holiday.<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth, known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/juneteenth-us-second-independence-day-now-federal-holiday-180978015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">America&#8217;s Second Independence Day<\/a>, has been commemorated as a federally-recognized holiday since 2021, providing millions of Americans with a paid day off and the opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>The holiday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/06\/18\/juneteenth-federal-holiday-monday\/70322099007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honors<\/a>\u00a0the date when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas in 1865 with 2,000 Union troops to proclaim that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/explore\/stories\/our-american-story-juneteenth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free<\/a> \u2013 two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about government offices and buildings and whether or not they&#8217;ll be open on Juneteenth.<\/p>\n<p>When is Juneteenth 2025?<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth is always celebrated on June 19. This year, the date falls on a Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Will government offices be closed on Juneteenth?<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/federal-holidays\/#url=Overview\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/federal-holidays\/#url=Overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Office of Personnel Management<\/a>, Thursday, June 19 is designated as a federal holiday and non-essential government offices will be closed on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Many public institutions at the local and state levels will follow suit, but it&#8217;s best to check with your local government on closures in your area.<\/p>\n<p>2025 federal holiday calendar<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the federal holiday calendar for the remainder of 2025, according to the OPM:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Juneteenth:<\/strong> Thursday, June 19<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independence Day:<\/strong> Friday, July 4<\/li>\n<li><strong>Labor Day:<\/strong> Monday, Sept. 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Columbus Day:<\/strong> Monday, Oct. 13<\/li>\n<li><strong>Veterans Day:<\/strong> Tuesday, Nov. 11<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thanksgiving:<\/strong> Thursday, Nov. 27<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christmas:<\/strong> Thursday, Dec. 25<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Is the post office open on Juneteenth?
