Teddy Sheringham has hit out at Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada’s comments about the club winning the Premier League by 2028<\/p>\n

Teddy Sheringham has criticised chief executive Omar Berrada for his ‘dreamlike’ comments regarding Manchester United’s aspirations of claiming the Premier League<\/a> title by 2028, highlighting a preference for cautious progress over “pie in the sky” assertions.<\/p>\n

Following a disappointing season that saw the Red Devils finish in 15th place and miss out on European competition after a loss to Tottenham in the Europa League<\/a> final, patience is being preached. This comes as Liverpool<\/a> matched United’s haul of 20 English league titles, a first for them since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign ending with a championship in 2013.<\/p>\n

As Manchester United<\/a> positions itself to celebrate its 150th anniversary with ‘Project 150’, aiming to win both the men’s and women’s league titles by 2028, the prospect seems distant.<\/p>\n

Berrada this month confidently told United We Stand “I firmly believe that we can do it”, yet Sheringham views such targets as potentially unconstructive.<\/p>\n

“Omar Berrada’s comments are dreamlike,” Sheringham told SkyBet.<\/p>\n

“In football clubs, you’ve got to have small steps to get to places and if you see those small steps and are encouraged and moving in the right direction, that’s when you start looking positively (at the future).<\/p>\n

“But when people come out with quotes like that, it can be pie in the sky when you’ve got to give the manager time to get things right.”<\/p>\n

There are questions over whether Ruben Amorim will receive the necessary patience and belief from Manchester United’s hierarchy given his tough start since his appointment in November.<\/p>\n

Sheringham, a legend of the club\u2019s treble-winning campaign in 1999, believes Amorim retains the support of those higher up, yet acknowledges that a slow start to the new season could be detrimental.<\/p>\n

“For Manchester United, the results must improve,” Sheringham added.<\/p>\n

“It can’t go on like this.<\/p>\n

“The way the talk is \u2013 ‘it’s alright, we’re gearing for next year, everything is OK for next season’ \u2013 but I think they’re a long way off being anything like the Manchester United of old and the pressure will be on Ruben Amorim, without a doubt.<\/p>\n
