unemployment rate fell for the third consecutive month in May, but remained higher than at the same point last year, suggesting the job market is still under intense pressure ahead of a critical graduation season.<\/p>\n<p>The youth jobless rate, which covers those aged 16 to 24 living in urban areas, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3248696\/china-jobs-youth-unemployment-rate-returns-adjusted-stands-149?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">excluding students<\/a>, stood at 14.9 per cent last month, down from 15.8 per cent the previous month, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But the rate remains higher than the 14.2 per cent reading recorded last May, and is likely to shoot up once again when a record 12.2 million university students graduate and enter the job market this summer.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cChina still faces pressure in maintaining stable employment, mainly due to complex changes in the external environment,\u201d said NBS spokesperson Fu Linghui on Monday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cThe coexistence of recruitment difficulties in some domestic industries and great employment pressures for certain groups persists, with ongoing issues regarding a mismatch between human resource supply and demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, several government departments jointly announced a fresh package of measures, which included <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3311152\/chinas-youth-unemployment-rate-falls-ahead-crunch-graduation-season?module=Economic%20Indicators&amp;pgtype=section?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\"
