I\u2019d been working out since I was 20\u2014I&#8217;d do some dumbbell exercises here and there in my 30s and 40s but I didn&#8217;t follow a plan and I wasn&#8217;t consistent. Instead, I was mostly a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a22995307\/cardio-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a22995307\/cardio-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cardio\" data-node-id=\"0.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">cardio<\/a> queen, logging five miles a day four to five days a week with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62777117\/running-while-on-ozempic\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62777117\/running-while-on-ozempic\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"run club\" data-node-id=\"0.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">run club<\/a> or as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62740096\/marathon-after-baby-pelvic-floor\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62740096\/marathon-after-baby-pelvic-floor\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"marathon training plan\" data-node-id=\"0.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">marathon training plan<\/a> with weekly long runs. If I wasn\u2019t running, I was taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a26306128\/cycling-vs-running\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a26306128\/cycling-vs-running\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"cycling\" data-node-id=\"0.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">cycling<\/a> class or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64589908\/running-vs-swimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64589908\/running-vs-swimming\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"swimming\" data-node-id=\"0.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">swimming<\/a> laps.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">But I literally ran myself into the ground\u2014my body could no longer handle high-intensity cardio, and a series of injuries and a severe case of over-exhaustion eventually landed me in the hospital. I decided to scale back on running and turned to strength training workouts because I wanted to lose weight and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a61499205\/how-to-build-muscle-after-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a61499205\/how-to-build-muscle-after-50\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"grow muscle during menopause\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">grow muscle during menopause<\/a>. I also knew strength training was crucial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62704292\/exercise-for-bone-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62704292\/exercise-for-bone-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"for bone health\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">for bone health<\/a> to prevent the risk of osteoporosis or bone density loss.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"2.0\">At 50, I picked up a kettlebell for the first time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a35994889\/kettlebell-upper-body-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a35994889\/kettlebell-upper-body-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kettlebells\" data-node-id=\"3.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Kettlebells<\/a> were accessible at my local gym, so I hired a coach to teach me the proper mechanics and began kettlebell training five days a week. I missed getting a runner&#8217;s high, but I appreciated the variety of moves I could train with only one piece of equipment, and loved feeling strong. I even competed in a kettlebell competition after a few months of training and won in my age group.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At this point, I was hooked on kettlebell training, but I still craved more out of my workout routine. I wanted to utilize the entire gym in addition to kettlebells and become the strongest version of myself. So I hired another trainer and learned about barbell lifts (like back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19904135\/types-of-squats\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19904135\/types-of-squats\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"squats\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">squats<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64551891\/how-to-do-a-deadlift\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64551891\/how-to-do-a-deadlift\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"deadlifts\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">deadlifts<\/a>) and the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60720121\/progressive-overload-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60720121\/progressive-overload-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive overload\" data-node-id=\"5.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">progressive overload<\/a> (gradually increasing the intensity, volume, or duration of workouts over time to build strength).  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">For the first time in my life, I grew muscle, and felt powerful in a way running never made me feel. I continued heavy resistance training five days a week for the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"8.0\">Today, at 62, I still train hard, but now I give myself an extra day of recovery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My trainer still programs my workouts, and I focus on proper form, progressive overload, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19893499\/best-compound-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19893499\/best-compound-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"compound movements\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">compound movements<\/a> (exercises that engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously). For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g39028922\/dumbbell-leg-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g39028922\/dumbbell-leg-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower body workouts\" data-node-id=\"9.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">lower body workouts<\/a>, I do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19983280\/best-butt-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19983280\/best-butt-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"glutes\" data-node-id=\"9.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">glutes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19981853\/quads-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19981853\/quads-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"quads\" data-node-id=\"9.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">quads<\/a> day, and a posterior chain day for my glutes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19962155\/hamstring-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a19962155\/hamstring-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hamstrings\" data-node-id=\"9.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">hamstrings<\/a>. I do five to six moves per session, with two to three sets of 10 to 15 reps. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My favorite move is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20698895\/romanian-deadlift-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20698895\/romanian-deadlift-3\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Romanian deadlift\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Romanian deadlift<\/a> (RDL) because they make me feel so strong and powerful. They\u2019re a staple in my workout routine and I recently crushed a new PR of 10 reps at 200 pounds. By the end of this summer, my goal is to hit a 200-pound RDL at the same rep range. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I haven\u2019t returned to running, but I do 20 minutes on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64726984\/elliptical-benefits-low-impact-cardio\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64726984\/elliptical-benefits-low-impact-cardio\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"elliptical\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">elliptical<\/a> three days a week for cardiovascular health and aim to get at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a62598280\/accidental-step-count-scam\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a62598280\/accidental-step-count-scam\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"10,000 steps a day\" data-node-id=\"12.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">10,000 steps a day<\/a>. I also love to hike\u2014within the past eight years I\u2019ve hiked Mount Kilimanjaro, the Camino Portuguese from Portugal into Spain, and the O-Circuit in Patagonia, Chile, just to name a few. On most hikes, I carry a heavy backpack, so the muscle and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43894461\/muscular-endurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43894461\/muscular-endurance\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"endurance\" data-node-id=\"12.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">endurance<\/a> I\u2019ve built in the gym totally pays off.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"13.0\">I count macros and honor the importance of protein.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">When I was a runner, I never followed a nutritional plan. I knew a balanced diet was important, but I fell into a pattern of restricting during the week and then having a free-for-all on the weekends. However, once I started consistently strength training, my trainer taught me how important it was to fuel my body to support muscle growth in menopause, so I began to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"count macros\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">count macros<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Now, I eat five meals a day and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62844019\/5-surprising-benefits-of-protein-beyond-building-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/food\/a62844019\/5-surprising-benefits-of-protein-beyond-building-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> is my number one priority\u2014I aim to eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63239899\/how-much-protein-to-eat-to-gain-one-pound-of-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63239899\/how-much-protein-to-eat-to-gain-one-pound-of-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"one gram of protein\" data-node-id=\"16.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">one gram of protein<\/a> per pound of ideal body weight. I meal prep every week, which sets me up for success and takes out the guesswork during mealtime. Eggs, lean meat, and Greek yogurt are my go-to sources, but I also love protein shakes and <a I embraced progressive overload.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Having a routine is important for staying consistent, but that doesn\u2019t mean I do the same workout every day. I repeat a lot of the same moves, but to get stronger, I always focus on progressive overload. Whether it\u2019s adding an extra five pounds to the barbell or tacking on two more reps to a set, gradually increasing the amount of stress on my body allows me to get stronger and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63981068\/how-to-grow-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63981068\/how-to-grow-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"build bigger muscles\" data-node-id=\"28.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">build bigger muscles<\/a>. Not to mention, bumping up the load helps me avoid plateaus where I can\u2019t lift heavier and keeps things exciting.  <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"29.0\">3. I set attainable goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I\u2019m extremely goal-oriented, so I love working toward a new challenge. While it used to be running a marathon, I always have my sights set on a feat whether it\u2019s hitting a new PR in the gym or hiking a difficult mountain range. My goals are never easy, but they\u2019re realistic, and they push me to get better and stronger. There\u2019s nothing better than relishing in the accomplishment of my wins. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">At 62, I\u2019m still setting goals, pushing my limits, and getting stronger. Is it hard work? Absolutely. But can it be done? 100 percent.
