The Woman Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) campaign<\/a> is asking “what would Nigel Farage do” following remarks made by the Reform UK leader when asked about proposed compensation for women born in the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Campaigners have long fought to tackle a perceived “historic injustice” resulting from the equalisation of the state pension age between men and women, with Waspi claiming some 3.8 million individuals were made financially worse-off. <\/p>\n

Last year, the Parliament and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) found that women were not adequately informed of the changes due to “maladministration” by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).<\/p>\n

As such, the ombudsman recommended a “Level 4” payout<\/a> to those affected, but left it to MPs to determine and vote on the appropriate compensation amount.<\/p>\n

So far, consecutive Labour and Conservative Governments have refused to commit to a state pension compensation package for Waspi women.<\/p>\n

While speaking to Talk Radio earlier this week, Farage sidestepped the issue when asked where Reform UK stand over a a potential payout.<\/p>\n

He said: “I’ve never made any false promises to Waspi women. I’m sorry, it’s done, it’s over. It’s not going to get changed.”<\/p>\n

On X, the Waspi campaign directly hit back at the MP for Clacton over his apparent “confusion” in regards to the compensation issue.<\/p>\n

Sharing his comments, the campaign wrote: “[Here is the] Answer from Nigel Farage – who seems to have the wrong end of the stick. Here is out latest briefing paper on our website to clear up any confusion he may have.<\/p>\n

“Does he think we’re campaigning to reverse the state pension age? It’s about compensation for maladministration, Nigel.”<\/p>\n

In its briefing paper, the campaign outlined what it would like MPs to begin doing in order to facilitate a compensation payment.<\/p>\n

Waspi added: “The PHSO was established almost 60 years ago as Parliament\u2019s \u2018special investigator\u2019, empowered to root out maladministration and injustice \u2013 it is up to MPs to ensure their reports are actioned.<\/p>\n

“It is now for all Members to ensure justice is delivered as quickly as possible to ensure compensation scheme proposals are bought before Parliament, in Government time.<\/p>\n

“The DWP should get around the table to resolve this injustice as quickly as possible to avoid a lengthy and costly High Court legal battle.”<\/p>\n

According to the campaign, 74 per cent of the public back compensation for Waspi women based on polling conducted in early 2025.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, 76 per cent of the public say all MPs should be given a vote in Parliament on compensation.<\/p>\n

As well as this, a survey of Waspi women carried out in late 2024 found 84 per cent worry about the ongoing high cost of energy bills, while 76 per cent of WASPI women said they worry about the future of their finances.<\/p>\n
