period drama for free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_253600194-bede-e1750341528813.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23456167\" alt=\"Joanna Vanderham as Diana Mitford, wearing a purple wide-brimmed hat, orange silk kimono and blue swimsuit while holding a glass of champagne.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tOutrageous is based on the true story of the aristocratic Mitford sisters (Picture: Kevin Baker\/UKTV\/BBC Picture Archives)<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in search of some period drama escapism with a splash of sauciness to it, six new episodes are waiting for you on a free streaming service.<\/p>\n<p>The appropriately-named drama <strong>Outrageous <\/strong>is based on the true story of the Mitford sisters, as told in Mary S Lovell\u2019s bestselling biography.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This adaptation \u2013 available on U&amp;Drama \u2013 sees the six sisters in 1930s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>, as the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/storms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storm<\/a> clouds of war gather and the pillars of aristocracy start to crack.<\/p>\n<p>The sib at the centre of this drama is Diana, played by Scottish actress Joanna Vanderham, who kicks things off with a very public and very scandalous <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/divorce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">divorce<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She trades in her husband for fascist leader Oswald Mosley (Joshua Sasse), which earned the real Diana the questionable honour of being dubbed \u2018the most hated woman in Britain\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In between the champagne and country estates, there\u2019s political intrigue in the mix as, elsewhere among the sibs, Jessica (Zoe Brough) pursues an interest in communism, while Unity (Shannon Watson) gets into fascism (what a thing to say \u2013 the real Unity mixed in Nazi circles), leaving their parents perhaps understandably bewildered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/SEI_226944354-2e2a.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23456185\" alt=\"Outrageous - First look Picture shows: Bessie Carter as Nancy Mitford\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tNancy is played by Bridgerton star Bessie Carter (Picture: Kevin Baker\/UKTV)<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<video id=\"3460871\" class=\"video-js\" poster=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2025\/06\/19\/12\/99530329-0-image-m-2_1750332638846.jpg\" data-opts=\"{\" controls=\"\" trailer=\"\" sisters=\"\" one=\"\" extraordinary=\"\" family.=\"\" stream=\"\" outrageous=\"\" for=\"\" free=\"\" on=\"\" u=\"\" from=\"\" june=\"\" the=\"\" true=\"\" story=\"\" of=\"\" mitford=\"\" sisters.=\"\" preload=\"metadata\" playsinline=\"\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"vjs-no-js\">To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tbrowser that<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/videojs.com\/html5-video-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supports HTML5<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tvideo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/video><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, we also have Nancy, played by Bridgerton star Bessie Carter, who\u2019s unlucky in love but tremendously good with a pen. <\/p>\n<p>On the whole, the Mitfords can\u2019t keep out of the gossipy headlines \u2013 they\u2019re the Kardashians of the 1930s \u2013 while their mother (Anna Chancellor) and House of Lords cardholder father (James Purefoy) try to make sense of what their daughters are up to.<\/p>\n<p>The best-known statement from the Mitford sisters\u2019 long-suffering mother, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/20\/fashion\/jewelry-mitford-sisters-tv-series-outrageous.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, was: \u2018Whenever I see the words \u201cPeer\u2019s Daughter\u201d in a headline, I know it\u2019s going to be something about one of you children.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWho were the Mitford sisters?\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Celebrated and sometimes scandalous, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080726152821\/http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/comment\/columnists\/ben_macintyre\/article2641492.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Times<\/a> once summarised the sisters as follows: \u2018Diana the fascist; Jessica the communist; Unity the Hitler-lover; Nancy the novelist; Deborah the Duchess and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur\u2019. Catchy.<\/p>\n<p>The six sisters gained much attention for their stylish and \u2013 if it wasn\u2019t clear already \u2013 occasionally controversial lives in high society. Their heyday marked a high-water-mark of the British upper class.<\/p>\n<p>Much of what we know about the sisters, and that is dramatised in the show, is because they were prolific letter-writers. Love, death, passion, elopements, imprisonment, suicide.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u2018They had passionate opinions, and were prepared to go to jail for what they believed in, were prepared to kill themselves for what they believed in.
