The Athletic has live coverage of Inter Miami vs Porto<\/a> and Sounders vs Athletico<\/a> at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gianni Infantino\u2019s grand experiment has now fully gotten underway, with all 32 teams having played their opening matches in this newfangled Club World Cup. There\u2019s still much we don\u2019t know about the viability of the tournament in this format, as well as the impact it will have on the participants. For now, however, the balance and quality of (most) games have made a fine first impression<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Welcome to the first edition of The Athletic\u2019s Club World Cup daily power rankings, our look at who\u2019s hot, who\u2019s not, and how the struggle for global club supremacy is shaking out. Share your comments below and don\u2019t be shy to disagree. We\u2019ll run the rankings up to before the semifinals.<\/p>\n

We will update these rankings at the end of each day\u2019s play. Unlike our pre-tournament rankings<\/a> that focused on the historical might of each team, this series is designed to live very much in the present. Simply, we\u2019ll use the results of this competition alone to project who has the best chance to win the trophy \u2014 as well as teams who appear doomed to an early ticket home.<\/p>\n

Coming into the tournament, the bettors\u2019 favorites all came from UEFA\u2019s contingent of clubs. However, the broader story of the 16 group-opening matches was an impressive balance across the confederations. Clubs from South America, Africa, Asia and North America gave their opposite numbers plenty to sweat beyond the mid-day kickoff times under a mid-summer sun.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, here\u2019s the state of affairs as the group stage readies its second batches of games.<\/p>\n

The Athletic Club World Cup Power Rankings \u2013 June 19<\/p>\n

1. Bayern Munich<\/strong> (-): Smashed 10 past Auckland but bigger tests await.<\/p>\n

2. Paris Saint-Germain<\/strong> (-): European champs made Atl\u00e9ti look like minnows.<\/p>\n

3. Manchester City<\/strong> (-): Cherki, Reijnders, and Foden all impressive. Field, beware.<\/p>\n

4. Chelsea<\/strong> (-): Creative and controlled opener. Palmer: 1g\/2a in last 1,529 minutes.<\/p>\n

5. Flamengo<\/strong> (-): Played like a favorite. Chelsea clash immediately must-watch.<\/p>\n

6. Juventus<\/strong> (-): Day one\u2019s biggest xG overperformers. Still, showed more intent than throughout 2024-25.<\/p>\n

7. River Plate<\/strong> (-): Physicality set a strong tone against Urawa.<\/p>\n

8. Inter Milan<\/strong> (-): Only Bayern out-generated their 2.68 xG. Still fell victim to Sergio Ramos.<\/p>\n

9. Botafogo<\/strong> (-): Clinical first half, but too comfortable afterwards against Seattle.<\/p>\n

10. Real Madrid<\/strong> (-): Still learning Alonsoball. Defense looked shaky. Trust the process?<\/p>\n

11. Boca Juniors<\/strong> (-): The field\u2019s best-supported team in Miami. Could rue blown 2-0 lead.<\/p>\n

12. Al Hilal<\/strong> (-): Bounou\u2019s heroics preserve point against Madrid. May have won with Mitrovi\u0107.<\/p>\n

13. Palmeiras<\/strong> (-): Outplayed Porto in scoreless draw. Group A\u2019s pacesetter.<\/p>\n

14. Benfica<\/strong> (-): Gutsy comeback to spare early blushes. Concerning lack of creativity.<\/p>\n

15. Fluminense<\/strong> (-): Resilient start, but clearly left two more points on table against Dortmund.<\/p>\n

16. Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong> (-): \u201cThe Sky is the Limit<\/a>\u201d after statement win<\/p>\n

17. FC Salzburg<\/strong> (-): Like the crops, their performance sure needed the rain.<\/p>\n

18. FC Porto<\/strong> (-): Lucky to claim point against Palmeiras. Didn\u2019t buckle under pressure.<\/p>\n

19. Borussia Dortmund<\/strong> (-): Sleepwalked through opener. In Jobe We Trust.<\/p>\n

20. Atl\u00e9tico Madrid<\/strong> (-): Botafogo (and Seattle) will sense opportunity against reeling Atl\u00e9ti.<\/p>\n

21. Seattle Sounders<\/strong> (-): Comeback fell just short. Now come the European giants.<\/p>\n

22. Pachuca<\/strong> (-): Could hardly get going against a limited Salzburg.<\/p>\n

23. Al Ahly<\/strong> (-): Outplayed Messi\u2019s side for 45, hung tough thereafter.<\/p>\n

24. Los Angeles FC<\/strong> (-): A credible showing against a top Premier League side at full strength.<\/p>\n

25. Inter Miami<\/strong> (-): Wasted opportunity to open with a bang. Far too predictable and petulant.<\/p>\n

26. Urawa Red Diamonds<\/strong> (-): Created great looks \u2013 just couldn\u2019t convert.<\/p>\n

27. Monterrey<\/strong> (-): Fought for a draw, but wildly outplayed by Inter.<\/p>\n

28. Ulsan HD<\/strong> (-): Gave Mamelodi a game, but couldn\u2019t turn good build-up into threats.<\/p>\n

29. Wydad Casablanca<\/strong> (-): 2-0 against City a fair scoreline \u2013 and validation of quality.<\/p>\n

30. Esp\u00e9rance de Tunis<\/strong> (-): Scrapped with Flamengo for tournament-high 39-foul contest.<\/p>\n

31. Al-Ain<\/strong> (-): Rui Patricio sure has fallen off, hasn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n

32. Auckland City<\/strong> (-): It can only get better after shipping 10.<\/p>\n
