Angelina Jolie<\/strong> will never forget the moment she first set her eyes on her son Maddox<\/strong> at an orphanage in Cambodia when he was 3 months old.<\/p>\n

\u201cMad was the last kid I saw,\u201d she said during an appearance on Inside the Actors Studio<\/a> in 2005. He was sound asleep when they put him in Angelina\u2019s arms. \u201cThen he opened his eyes and just stared at me for the longest time. I just stared at him, and I started crying, and he smiled.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress said she wasn\u2019t sure she had what it takes to be a mom until then. \u201cThe fact that this little kid seemed at ease gave me the courage to feel like I could make him happy,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so we became a family right then.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 20 years later, Angelina and her oldest still share a close and unique bond. (The Eternals star is also mom to Pax<\/strong>, 21, Zahara<\/strong>, 20, Shiloh<\/strong>, 19, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne<\/strong> and Knox<\/strong> with ex-husband Brad Pitt<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

In March, she told the New York Times<\/a> that Maddox \u2014 who studied biochemistry at South Korea\u2019s Yonsei University \u2014 is now living in Manhattan in the apartment she lived in during her 20s.<\/p>\n

Now, a source tells Star that the 50-year-old is begging \u201cMad\u201d to return home as his sibs Pax and Shiloh have started to act out. (Pax was spotted looking inebriated while partying in Hollywood with friends on May 31, while Star previously reported that Shiloh has been staying out late with her dancer pals.)<\/p>\n

\u201cAngie always depended on Maddox to keep the younger kids in line,\u201d says the source. \u201cIt really sucks for her that he\u2019s not around. Pax is going off the rails and Shiloh could really use Maddox\u2019s steady hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Support System<\/p>\n

Angelina was open about how hard it was for her to say goodbye when Maddox left for college in 2019. \u201cOh my god, [I did] an \u2018embarrass your children\u2019 ugly cry,\u201d she told Entertainment Tonight <\/a>at the time, adding that she \u201cturned around six times\u201d before the mother-son duo even got to the airport. \u201cAngelina and Maddox have always been exceptionally tight,\u201d says the source.<\/p>\n

After all, Maddox, who was 3 when Angelina adopted Zahara from Ethiopia, was around long before she got together with Brad and the rest of the kids joined the family. Says the insider, \u201cAngelina rescued Maddox as a newborn and immediately made him the center of her personal universe.\u201d<\/p>\n

His status as the eldest, and his mom\u2019s right hand, made him a peacemaker at home. \u201cThe more Maddox matured, the more he wanted to help his mother,\u201d reveals the source, noting that he became the man of the house following Angelina and Brad\u2019s 2016 split.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s grown up into such a good man,\u201d she told ET<\/a> in 2019. Adds the source, \u201cMaddox was always grounded and non-confrontational.\u201d<\/p>\n

While happy her son is finding his own way in the world, Angelina feels his absence intensely \u2014 especially his influence on Pax.<\/p>\n

In addition to his recent outing, Pax has been in two dangerous e-bike accidents and was hospitalized last July. \u201cPax is a real handful,\u201d says the source.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got that adrenaline-junkie nature and thrives off life in the fast lane.\u201d Maddox \u201cwas a very calm and sensible influence on his brother when he lived at home,\u201d the source explains, noting that Maddox is the only one Angelina trusts with personal family matters.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s no stranger to risky behavior herself. Angelina told The Times<\/a> in 2003 she tried \u201cjust about every drug possible\u201d during her younger years, later joking to Anderson Cooper<\/strong> that her only response<\/a> when her kids bring up her past behavior is to say, \u201cYes, I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
