{"id":198621,"date":"2025-06-20T01:39:31","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T01:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/198621\/"},"modified":"2025-06-20T01:39:31","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T01:39:31","slug":"most-britons-want-to-be-back-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/198621\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Britons want to be back in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It found that 56 per cent want the UK to return to being part of the EU, while 61 per cent believe<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-cost-statistics-numbers-five-years-eu-b2689655.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Brexit has been a failure. <\/a>Of these, the overwhelming majority, more than eight out of ten, blame <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/boris-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boris Johnson<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/conservative-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative Party, while <\/a>more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/conservative-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two-thirds blame Nigel Farage. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson was one of the most high-profile members of the Leave campaign, and he and others were accused of backing the idea with no plan for how Brexit would work in practice.   <\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s exit from the bloc is on course to cut UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade<\/a> by 15 per cent, the government\u2019s independent financial watchdog has warned, despite Vote Leave campaigners arguing it would receive a boost. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Labour ministers pledged to \u201ctear down\u201d barriers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/keir-starmer-brexit-reset-trade-deals-b2629057.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to trade<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/european-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> after new figures showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brexit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> has cost UK business \u00a337bn a year.  <\/p>\n<p>And The Independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/brexit-paperwork-business-red-tape-b2717885.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed that Brexit had created a \u201cmind-blowing\u201d two billion extra pieces of paperwork \u2013 enough to wrap around the world 15 times.<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/b8bf99c4e31ad392d69045b17ec20e88Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzQ4MDE3NzIw-2.77786843.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/>Eight in ten people blame Boris Johnson for Brexit (Danny Lawson\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The latest survey found that 56 per cent of people believe it was wrong for Britain to vote to leave the EU. And almost two-thirds, 65 per cent, now want to see a closer relationship with the EU. However, just 28 per cent of Tory voters and 16 per cent of voters for Mr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/nigel-farage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farage<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/reform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reform<\/a> UK want to rejoin the EU. <\/p>\n<p>Next week it will be nine years since the landmark Brexit referendum vote.   <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2157408990.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"\/>Two-thirds of people hold Reform UK leader Nigel Farage responsible for Brexit (AFP\/ Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Sir Nick Harvey, CEO of the pro-EU group European Movement UK, said that since the UK left the EU \u201cthe consequences for the British people have become increasingly stark. This latest polling not only reinforces that \u2013 it shows that more and more people see the benefits of much closer ties with the European Union. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brexit has delivered a sustained and worsening blow to the UK economy, one that is especially pronounced for the small and medium-sized enterprises that form the backbone of our commercial and industrial landscape, who are living with the consequences every day. That has made us all poorer, depleted our economy and weakened our country with a thousand tiny cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt Smith, from YouGov, said: \u201cWhen we asked what type of relationship with the EU people would support, most Britons said they want the UK to return to the EU (56 per cent )&#8230;. This does not include many of those who voted to leave it in the first place (24 per cent ) or Conservative (28 per cent ) or Reform UK voters (16 per cent ).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the support for \u2018Breturn\u2019, many people feel the government has more important matters to deal with.
