As the global<br \/>\n                    economy grows, so will the chemical industry,<br \/>\n                    and that will require companies to hire<br \/>\n                    employees, said Bob Kumpf, managing director at<br \/>\n                    Deloitte.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    \u201cSociety expects us to innovate, whether it\u2019s<br \/>\n                    emerging technologies, whether it\u2019s<br \/>\n                    biotechnology, whether it\u2019s all the downstream<br \/>\n                    applications,\u201d Kumpf said. \u201cThis is a growth<br \/>\n                    sector.\u201d\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Kumpf and others at Deloitte discussed a recent<br \/>\n                    employment study by the consultancy during the<br \/>\n                    annual meeting of the American Chemistry<br \/>\n                    Council (ACC).\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Even if the nature of growth in the chemical<br \/>\n                    industry is changing, it is not stopping, he<br \/>\n                    said. \u201cThere is no peak materials in any views<br \/>\n                    that we have.\u201d\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    While new technologies like AI and remote work<br \/>\n                    are changing how people do their jobs, those<br \/>\n                    technologies are not eliminating the need for<br \/>\n                    labor.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    The following chart summarizes Deloitte\u2019s<br \/>\n                    forecasts for US employment trends in the oil<br \/>\n                    and gas (O&amp;G) industry as well as in the<br \/>\n                    chemicals industry.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" data-ot-ignore=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3085090 lazyload\" alt=\"\" width=\"839\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750386252_578_getAsset.aspx\" data-eio-rwidth=\"839\" data-eio-rheight=\"511\"\/>\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Chemical companies will have to manage that<br \/>\n                    growth in employment amid a wave of<br \/>\n                    retirements. Deloitte expects that 20% of the<br \/>\n                    current workforce will retire by 2030, said<br \/>\n                    Kate Hardin, executive director at Deloitte.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Deloitte broke down management strategies into<br \/>\n                    four pillars consisting of talent ownership,<br \/>\n                    composition, capability and mobility.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>TALENT OWNERSHIP<br \/><\/strong>Chemical<br \/>\n                    companies are relying on third-parties to<br \/>\n                    manage digital upgrades and information<br \/>\n                    technology services, while maintaining nearly<br \/>\n                    88% of its workforce as internal.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>COMPOSITION<br \/><\/strong>The study<br \/>\n                    shows that chemical employment will rise in the<br \/>\n                    following sectors:\n                  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Site and plant workers\n                    <\/li>\n<li>Specialists and technicians\n                    <\/li>\n<li>Business support\n                    <\/li>\n<li>Customer engagement\n                    <\/li>\n<li>Leadership\n                    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n                    Among site and plant workers in the energy and<br \/>\n                    chemicals industry, Deloitte expects rising<br \/>\n                    global demand, regulatory changes and<br \/>\n                    infrastructure will contribute to rising demand<br \/>\n                    for these employees.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    For specialists and technicians, growth drivers<br \/>\n                    are occupational health and safety, industrial<br \/>\n                    engineers and material engineers. The study<br \/>\n                    forecasts declines in chemical engineers.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    In the past, those chemical engineers had left<br \/>\n                    for jobs in the pharmaceutical and<br \/>\n                    biotechnology sectors, Hardin said. More<br \/>\n                    recently, they are going into software<br \/>\n                    development.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    For business support, employment growth will<br \/>\n                    center around computer occupations, computer<br \/>\n                    network architecture and training and<br \/>\n                    development specialties.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Overall, automation, outsourcing and AI will<br \/>\n                    reduce employment for some job types.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>CAPABILITY<br \/><\/strong>Deloitte<br \/>\n                    expects generative and agentic AI to make<br \/>\n                    employees more productive. The consultancy<br \/>\n                    broke down AI\u2019s effects on employment into<br \/>\n                    human-in-the-loop tasks, human-enabled tasks<br \/>\n                    and human-exclusive tasks.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    For energy and chemical workhours as a whole,<br \/>\n                    about one-third are expected to be<br \/>\n                    human-in-the-loop tasks, in which machines and<br \/>\n                    agentic AI lead the effort.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    Another third will be human enabled, under<br \/>\n                    which humans augment digital technologies.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    The rest will be human exclusive, which covers<br \/>\n                    tasks only people can do.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    For some of these human-exclusive tasks, there<br \/>\n                    could be prolonged vacancies, especially for<br \/>\n                    occupations such as mechanics, repairers and<br \/>\n                    vehicle operators, according to the study.<br \/>\n                    These jobs have high turnover, and chemical<br \/>\n                    companies will compete with construction and<br \/>\n                    other industrial sectors for these workers.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>MOBILITY<br \/><\/strong>Digitization is<br \/>\n                    making more skills common among industries and<br \/>\n                    sectors, giving employees and employers a wider<br \/>\n                    pool from which to choose. Some chemical jobs<br \/>\n                    can be remote, but a robust on-site workforce<br \/>\n                    remains essential for running chemical plants.\n                  <\/p>\n<p>\n                    <strong>WORKFORCE AMONG FEW TOOLS CHEMS HAVE IN<br \/>\n                    CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT<br \/><\/strong>Once<br \/>\n                    more, chemical companies expect 2025 to be<br \/>\n                    another challenging year in which they will<br \/>\n                    need to look internally to increase revenue and<br \/>\n                    profits.
