{"id":199584,"date":"2025-06-20T10:10:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T10:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/199584\/"},"modified":"2025-06-20T10:10:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T10:10:11","slug":"new-look-banana-bridge-reopens-five-months-ahead-of-schedule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/199584\/","title":{"rendered":"New-look Banana Bridge reopens five months ahead of schedule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Grade II listed, iron and steel bridge was shut on May 13 last year<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1_BRI_PG_040425banana-56jpgThe.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The Banana Bridge has reopened<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">After more than a year of repairs Langton Street Bridge &#8211; better known as the Banana Bridge &#8211; has reopened to the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Grade II listed, iron and steel bridge was shut on May 13 last year, to conduct its first major works since its construction in 1883.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Banana Bridge crosses the River Avon to connect Langton Street and St. Luke&#8217;s Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is located between <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedminster <\/a>Bridge and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath<\/a> Bridge and provides a pedestrian link between the north and south of the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The much-loved bridge named for its arched structure and yellow colour, reopened five months ahead of schedule today (Friday, June 20) following a full restoration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Bristol, accompanied by city transport chiefs and pupils from St Mary Redcliffe Primary School and Oasis Academy Temple Quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a>\u2019s transport and connectivity committee, said: \u201cI am delighted that we have reopened Banana Bridge as I know many of the pupils from nearby schools and plenty of local people have missed being able to use it, so we will all be pleased it has reopened early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt is looking very smart and more banana-like than ever with its fresh coat of yellow paint. The refurbishment has safe-guarded this Grade II listed structure for many years to come, maintaining important connections across the New Cut and a piece of Bristol\u2019s heritage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The restoration work, which started in May 2024, has seen Langton Street Bridge\u2019s structure, masonry and decking repaired, the bridge strengthened and repainted, a new handrail installed, and its surface paving stones re-laid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The repair project has cost around \u00a31.4 million, which is being funded by the Department for Transport\u2019s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Banana Bridge is the third to have its refurbishment completed as part of the \u00a316 million investment into restoring the New Cut bridges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">New <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/brislington\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Brislington<\/a> Bridge was repaired in 2024 and the Goal Ferry Bridge refurbishment was completed in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Three other bridges currently still have work ongoing &#8211; these are the Bathurst Swing Bridge, Sparke Evans Park Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Helen Godwin, West of England mayor, said: \u201cGetting the basics right by fixing our region\u2019s roads and bridges will lay the foundations for a better transport system overall for the West of England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cEarlier this month, we secured \u00a3752 million for that next stage.
