Scottie Scheffler told reporters after taking the first round lead of the <\/strong>Travelers Championship<\/strong><\/a> his hands are far too sweaty to try Collin Morikawa’s new tactic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scheffler hit the front with an 8-under 62<\/a> at the PGA Tour’s final signature event of the 2025 campaign but there was a lot of attention on Morikawa’s behaviour.<\/p>\n

The golfer alternated between playing some shots at TPC River Highlands with his glove on and some off.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Two-time major winner Morikawa<\/a>, 28, said he has been swinging well lately but has routinely missed ’30 feet’ left of his intended targets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“When it comes down to it, our hands are what makes us such good athletes and such good golfers is that we have so much feel,” Morikawa said. \u00a0<\/p>\n

“For some reason when I’ve taken the glove off this week, it’s kind of worked. It’s just — problem is it’s really hot and it’s sweaty.<\/p>\n

“But honestly, I started seeing shots that I was hitting, and even the bad ones were not good, but like that’s kind of where I expect them to be.<\/p>\n

“It was just a back-and-forth kind of thing.”<\/p>\n

Morikawa said primarily he was taking his glove off when hitting his wedges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has never done it in competition before.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s very, very weird,” Morikawa said. “Trust me.”<\/p>\n

So what inspired it?<\/p>\n

Morikawa said the thought popped into his head whilst he was practicing earlier in the week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I was sitting on the range on Monday kind of working by myself, and I’ve done bare feet, so no shoes, and that normally works, but I don’t think I’m going to do that,” he joked.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It’s just trying a bunch of things. Look, we’re crazy. Honestly, we’re crazy because we try a lot of things, but that’s what makes us really good is we’re trying to find the little things.<\/p>\n

“Even though last week [at the US Open<\/a>] I think I was top five or whatever in approach, it’s like, I know I can get better and feel more comfortable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Even though it ends up close, it’s a comfort factor of just being less stressed out there.”<\/p>\n

Scheffler<\/a> said he has also tried the tactic but his hands are far too sweaty.<\/p>\n

“You definitely won’t see me doing that,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Morikawa trails Scheffler by five strokes after round one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Masters champion Rory McIlroy<\/a> is two strokes behind.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley are also inside the top 10.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clark confirmed rumours of his outburst after his missed cut at the US Open were true.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He has now apologised<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
