Throughout the final pre-release single and opening track from <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/lorde-announces-new-album-virgin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virgin<\/a>, the reluctant star scrolls through aura photography, astrology, past lives, and the divine feminine, on the prowl for some clarity or at least a good screw. Her smartphone has become a divining rod, mapping out a path from Canal Street to <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/lorde-debuts-new-song-what-was-that-live-at-washington-square-park-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Square Park<\/a> in her adopted home of New York City. The Lorde of <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/lorde-solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Solar Power<\/a>\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/tracks\/lorde-mood-ring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mood Ring<\/a>\u201d derided the frivolities of wellness culture, but here she admits, \u201cI\u2019m ready to feel like I don\u2019t have the answers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/18614-lorde-pure-heroine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pure Heroine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/lorde-melodrama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melodrama<\/a> cast Lorde as an older sister to my generation. She\u2019d hit the young-adult life milestones a few years earlier and wrote songs to hand down her hard-won wisdom, as if to promise, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Ix6WHKxFWNw?si=9nu-RkxEdAbnbeAE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One day, you\u2019ll be cool<\/a>.\u201d I think that\u2019s why it\u2019s been a bit destabilizing to watch her so publicly, messily work through her relationships to gender and fame. If \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/tracks\/lorde-what-was-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What Was That<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/tracks\/lorde-man-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Man of the Year<\/a>\u201d could\u2019ve stayed in the drafts, so to speak, then \u201cHammer\u201d is punchier and more pop, a song on its way to someplace. <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/artists\/31783-jim-e-stack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim-E Stack<\/a>\u2019s production races forward with the frisson of an unquiet mind, kick drums and clipped vocals smearing like we\u2019re already at the club.
