The key negotiator is a little busy\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Per local press reports Mauritian Attorney General and chief Chagos negotiator Gavin Glover has been in Geneva over the weekend with his brother Brian \u2013 the new Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the UN. His presence is explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cHe was there defending Mauritius where the UN Committee on torture had concerns about reports of police torture in Mauritius. Gavin Glover has asserted that there is zero tolerance of police torture in the country\u2026 there are no negotiations underway in London at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The UN Committee Against Torture\u2019s \u201cquestions focused in particular on what the Mauritian government intended to do to better supervise police activities.\u201d The committee said it was concerned that there was no timetable for the implementation of Mauritius\u2019 Police and Criminal Evidence Bill to regulate arrests and concerning pretrial detentions\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The UN committee also took note of issues with Mauritius\u2019 justice system which include detention of accused suspects along with convicted criminals, the trial of minors, torture in Mauritian legal provisions, prison overcrowding, and police investigation delays.
