At first, staff members left the otters alone, hopeful that their mother might return for them. But when she didn\u2019t come after 24 hours, staff members contacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/evelynswildliferefuge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evelyn&#8217;s Wildlife Refuge<\/a> for help.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">Rescuers immediately knew the babies were in danger.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750488911_964_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"otters in carrier \" width=\"792\" height=\"572\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 572\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Cindy Lakin<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">\u201cOtters at that age would never be out of their den,\u201d wildlife rehabber Cindy Lakin told The Dodo. \u201cIf they are out, something has happened, and they need rescue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">The rescue team safely grabbed the otter pups, whom they named Cedar and Willow, and moved them into Lakin\u2019s care. The pair joined a group of other orphaned otter pups \u2014 Poppy, Oakley, Cherry and Aspen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750488912_531_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"otters on blanket \" width=\"792\" height=\"591\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 591\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Cindy Lakin <\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">When the otters arrived, they were severely dehydrated and underweight. Lakin administered fluids and antibiotics to help them recover. Eventually, the otters began growing and eating well. Just recently, the otters advanced into the next stage of their lives, which involves eating fish and learning how to swim.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750488912_676_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"otters playing \" width=\"792\" height=\"561\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 561\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Cindy Lakin<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">When they\u2019re not busy mastering important otter skills, Cedar and Willow like to play with each other and their friends.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cFor otters, everything is fun and games,\u201d Lakin said. \u201cThey love their toys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"2\">Rescuers plan to release all six otters this spring.
