People will no longer be able to retire early unless they have a lengthy amount of pension contributions<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/2_Spain-Andalusia-Cabo-de-Gata-back-view-of-couple-looking-at-the-sea.jpg\" alt=\"Two people sitting on deck chairs\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The retirement age is set to increase to 67 in 2027(Image: Getty Images\/Westend61)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">People living in Spain have been issued a warning following a reform to the country&#8217;s pension system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/spain\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SpanishLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish<\/a> residents have been hit by a string of measures which could shove the retirement age higher. It comes as officials have changed the rules for pension contributions. This year, locals will still be able to retire at 65, but only if they have earned a minimum of 38 years and 3 months of contributions. The changes should help officials meet the objective of raising the retirement age to 67 in 2027. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/spain\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Spain\u2019sLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain\u2019s<\/a> Social Security said the move would help \u201cguarantee the long-term sustainability of the pension system and ensure it continues to provide fair pensions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Unfortunately, the reform is likely to take a toll on anyone who wishes to retire at an earlier stage in life. For example, if you wanted to retire at 63, you would still need a total of 38 years and 3 months in contributions, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/euroweeklynews.com\/2025\/04\/12\/retiring-in-spain-are-the-golden-years-moving-further-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"reports EuroWeeklyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reports EuroWeekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Anyone who would like to say their goodbyes to working before the official retirement <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/age-uk\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"ageLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">age<\/a>, will have to patiently wait until 64 years and 8 months, if they don&#8217;t have the required contributions. However, you would still need at least 35 years of contributions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Even if you manage to tick off all of the above boxes, sanctions such as monthly pension reductions could also be a problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Last month, the institute for actuaries in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/spain\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"SpainLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a> warned that the difference between what people contribute and what they receive &#8220;has continued to worsen over the last five years&#8221;, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.surinenglish.com\/spain\/pension-contributions-benefits-20250310080825-nt.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"reports Sur in EnglishLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reports Sur in English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The report stated: &#8220;The reforms undertaken in 2021 and 2023 have been insufficient and have failed to curb the growing imbalance between the actuarial present value of the pension income a person receives in retirement and the actuarial present value of the pension contributions they have made during their working career.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Spain is the latest country to crackdown on pensions as part of a system reform.
