{"id":202715,"date":"2025-06-21T14:16:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-21T14:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/202715\/"},"modified":"2025-06-21T14:16:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T14:16:09","slug":"mercedes-f1-engines-good-as-gold-despite-recent-reliability-issues-says-toto-wolff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/202715\/","title":{"rendered":"Mercedes F1 engines \u201cgood as gold\u201d despite recent reliability issues, says Toto Wolff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toto Wolff has defended Mercedes\u2019 Formula 1 engines as \u201cgood as gold\u201d after a series of reliability issues in recent Formula 1 races, stressing that the \u201cfailures have been minimal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Wolff made the remark after last weekend\u2019s Canadian Grand Prix, which saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/teams\/williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Williams<\/a> driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/racer\/912055\/alex-albon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Albon<\/a> retire after just seven laps after a \u201cPU\u201d engine on his Mercedes unit.<\/p>\n<p>It was the latest in a series of reliability issues for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/teams\/mercedes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes<\/a> which have affected both its factory team and engine customers Williams and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/teams\/aston-martin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aston Martin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/racer\/1043641\/andrea-kimi-antonelli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kimi Antonelli <\/a>notably retired from his home race at Imola due to what was described as a throttle issue, while a loss of oil pressure in the engine led to another DNF in the Spanish GP.<\/p>\n<p>Teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/racer\/912063\/george-russell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">George Russell<\/a>, who claimed victory in Canada, also encountered problems earlier in the season, with an electrical issue in Monaco qualifying cutting short his session in Q2 and compromising his weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Customer team Aston Martin hasn\u2019t been spared either, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\/racer\/1\/fernando-alonso\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fernando Alonso<\/a> suffering a power loss in Monaco before ultimately retiring from the race.<\/p>\n<p>However, Mercedes team principal Wolff isn\u2019t concerned by these issues, pointing to the German brand&#8217;s historically strong record since the introduction of the V6 hybrid engines in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes stole a march on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/f1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F1<\/a> rivals when the current 1.6-litre six-cylinder engines were introduced just over a decade ago, winning seven consecutive drivers\u2019 titles and eight consecutive constructors\u2019 championships in a row from 2014-21.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our engines have been as good as gold since the introduction of the hybrid era &#8211; and so strong,&#8221; Wolff was quoted by RacingNews365.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As it is the final year [of the rules set], all sights are on next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And Hywel [Thomas, HPP managing director] and his group are fully on top of the reliability issues that we have.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;And statistically, if you look at the many years, the failures we had were very minimal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we need to learn now what happened.
