It\u2019s yet another blow to a reef already suffering damage from pollution as well as climate change-driven ocean heat waves and sea level rise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300033b6mbh40n6vn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kelly J. van Woesik, a researcher at the North Carolina State University Center for Geospatial Analytics and a study author, first noticed unusually high numbers of sea urchins on snorkeling trips. \u201cI knew there was a story to be told,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300043b6m8brqod2o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She and her fellow researchers used data from scuba surveys and images taken from the air to track the health of the reef.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300053b6m9zn93rhk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe found on average 51 urchins per square meter, which is among the highest recorded densities on coral reefs anywhere in the world,\u201d van Woesik said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/kelly-van-woesik-2023-echinometra-mathaei-the-most-abundant-sea-urchin-species-in-honaunau-bay-erodi.jpeg\" alt=\"Echinometra mathaei, the most abundant sea-urchin species in H\u014dnaunau Bay. They play a useful role in preventing algae overgrowth, which can choke off oxygen to coral. However, they also eat the reef and too many of them can cause damaging erosion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300073b6m18ma55w5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In H\u014dnaunau Bay, the coral is already struggling to reproduce and grow due to ocean heat and water pollution, leaving it even more vulnerable to the erosion inflicted by sea urchins.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300083b6mohsou526@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Its rate of growth has plummeted according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq16300093b6mvfut1swj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reef growth is typically measured by the amount of calcium carbonate \u2014 the substance which forms coral skeletons \u2014 it produces per square meter each year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000a3b6mcsn900q6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The reef in H\u014dnaunau Bay is growing 30 times more slowly than it did four decades ago, according to the study. Production levels were around 15 kilograms (33 pounds) per square meter in parts of Hawaii, signaling a healthy reef, according to research in the 1980s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000b3b6m8o8vv028@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, the reef in H\u014dnaunau Bay produces just 0.5 kg (1.1 pounds) per square meter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000c3b6mlr9xrktu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To offset erosion from urchins, at least 26% of the reef surface must be covered by living corals \u2013 and even more coral cover is necessary for it to grow.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/asner-reefscape-of-live-and-dead-large-corals-with-bioerosion-happening-on-the-dead-ones.jpg\" alt=\"Reefscape of live and dead large corals in H\u014dnaunau Bay, Hawaii.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1927\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000d3b6muhp4t6l1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gregory Asner, an ecologist at Arizona State University and study author, said what was happening in this part of Hawaii was emblematic of the mounting pressures facing reefs throughout the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000e3b6m7qd22f8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor 27 years I have worked in H\u014dnaunau Bay and other bays like it across Hawaii, but H\u014dnaunau stood out early on as an iconic example of a reef threatened by a combination of pressures,\u201d he said, citing warming ocean temperatures, pollution from tourism and heavy fishing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000f3b6mtk7wup49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The implications of coral decline are far-reaching. Coral reefs are sometimes dubbed the \u201crainforests of the sea\u201d because they support so much ocean life. They also play a vital role protecting coastlines from storm surges and erosion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000g3b6mst8pkfrz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf the reef can\u2019t keep up with sea-level rise, it loses its ability to limit incoming wave energy,\u201d said van Woesik. \u201cThat increases erosion and flooding risk of coastal communities.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000h3b6mez3519jm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kiho Kim, an environmental science professor at American University, who was not involved in the study, said the findings highlight the fragility of reef ecosystems under stress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000i3b6mbbca9ux1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDramatic increases in any species indicate an unusual condition that has allowed them to proliferate,\u201d Kim said. That imbalance can undermine diversity and reduce the reef\u2019s ability to provide essential ecosystem services including food security and carbon storage, he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc4kq163000j3b6m4nqza56y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite the challenges, researchers emphasize that the reef\u2019s future is not sealed.
