Britain First activists staged a small protest on Saturday, June 21, standing on a bridge above the A361 North Devon<\/a> Link Road with banners, Union Flags and the St George\u2019s Cross.<\/p>\n The group, described as \u201cextremists\u201d by a local farmer, drew honks of support from passing vehicles \u2014 despite numbering just three people.<\/p>\n The roadside demonstration carried the slogan \u201cno farmers, no food, pensioners before migrants\u201d, blending opposition to immigration with anger over changes to inheritance tax rules affecting the farming<\/a> community.<\/p>\n Among those taking part was Marie Townsend, a 74-year-old grandmother from North Devon, who said she had been involved with Britain First for over five years and an activist for the past two. \u201cI\u2019m very concerned about my children, my grandchildren\u2019s future \u2014 that\u2019s why I do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Marie insisted public support for such stunts had been strong in the region. \u201cWe\u2019ve done these bridge demos before in Devon and they\u2019ve been very successful. You can see the level of support. Obviously this is a busier road so people have got to be very careful how they\u2019re positioning themselves, but it\u2019s very, very supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n The protest came amid mounting concern among farmers over government proposals to apply a 20% tax rate to inherited agricultural assets worth more than \u00a31m. The policy, announced in the Autumn Budget, has been criticised by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) Committee for lacking proper consultation or affordability assessment.<\/p>\n But not all in the farming community welcomed Britain First\u2019s presence. James Wright, a farmer and Conservative campaigner, said: \u201cFarmers are proud, hardworking people who don\u2019t want their cause hijacked by extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBritain First turning up doesn\u2019t help anyone \u2013 it cheapens the real issues we\u2019re facing,\u201d he added, citing Labour\u2019s proposed tax increases as a genuine concern. \u201cYou can back farmers by buying British food in the supermarket.
