Tommy Fleetwood is in contention to win his first ever PGA Tour title as he leads the Travelers Championship by three shots.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fleetwood has been one of the best players in the world over the last decade and has a top-five finish in all four Majors.<\/p>\n

However, he has never managed to claim victory on the PGA Tour<\/a> – a fact that often seems truly unbelievable.<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old became the first person ever<\/a> to rake in $25m in prize money and never win a title.<\/p>\n

The Englishman fired a flawless 63, including five birdies and an eagle at the par-five 13th, to reach 16 under par, three clear of American pair Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley going into Sunday’s final round at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.<\/p>\n

Naturally, this was brought up moments after he finished his round.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m on top of a lot of stat lines for people that haven\u2019t won on the PGA TOUR, so to always be a No. 1 at something is always nice,\u201d he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, of course I would love to win on the PGA TOUR. I think it\u2019s like an element of your career that everybody wants, and I of course want it. <\/p>\n

“I haven\u2019t, this year especially, I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019ve given myself … I\u2019ve given myself a back-end chance a couple of times this year, but I\u2019ve not been in contention. <\/p>\n

“So this is like my first real chance, so I\u2019m really excited about that and looking forward to it.”<\/p>\n

Fleetwood would be a popular winner as the 34-year-old had the most top 10 finishes on the PGA Tour since 1983 without a win.<\/p>\n

That number totals 41 – seven more than the second man, Brett Quigley, on that list – but the elusive victory hovered into sight on a curious day when overnight leaders Scottie Scheffler<\/a> and Justin Thomas went backwards.<\/p>\n

Fleetwood joked about his winless record straight after his third round<\/p>\n

“It (winning) will come down to a bunch of things,” Fleetwood told CBS Sports.<\/p>\n

“I haven’t been in contention much at all this year, I’ve been on the outskirts if you like.<\/p>\n

“My best finishes have been just outside of being in contention, but like really close. So to put myself there and be in the last group (on Sunday), I’m really happy with that.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been here plenty of times, I’m looking forward to it. I’m happy with the work I’ve done and happy I’ve bounced back for the first few days of this tournament from last week (US Open).<\/p>\n

“It’s just an amazing opportunity for me to go out and enjoy it, and hopefully it’s our time.”<\/p>\n

World number one Scheffler made a triple bogey seven at the first hole and was strangely out of sorts for most of the day.<\/p>\n

Scheffler signed for a double bogey at the eighth and dropped more shots at the fourth and 16th saw him finish with a 72, nine shots adrift of Fleetwood at nine under par.<\/p>\n
