{"id":206156,"date":"2025-06-22T22:21:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-22T22:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/206156\/"},"modified":"2025-06-22T22:21:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-22T22:21:11","slug":"brown-spider-money-and-red-panda-arrive-at-paignton-zoo-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/206156\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown spider money and red panda arrive at Paignton Zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Two new animals have arrived at Paignton Zoo as part of a conservation breeding programme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A female red panda, an endangered species, and a female brown spider monkey, a critically endangered species, have been transported from zoos in France to the Devon site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Brown spider monkeys were added to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\" rel=\"noopener\">International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List<\/a> in 2020 because their populations in Columbia and Venezuela were declining due to the pet trade and habitat destruction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The IUCN said it believed there were fewer than 10,000 mature red pandas in the wild after their habitats in China had been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The panda will join a female called Ember while the spider monkey will join a troop consisting of females Luna and Lena and male Kikou.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Zookeepers said the monkey would initially remain off-show to visitors while the primates were introduced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Mammal keeper at Paignton Zoo James Shora said: &#8220;The red pandas offer those quieter, more contemplative moments, while the spider monkeys bring incredible dynamic energy from the forest canopies of South America. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It&#8217;s like having two completely different worlds side by side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The red panda came from Les Terres de Natae, Pont-Scorff and the brown spider monkey from Zoo Amiens M\u00e9tropole.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two new animals have arrived at Paignton Zoo as part of a conservation breeding programme.
