{"id":207142,"date":"2025-06-23T07:46:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T07:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207142\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T07:46:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T07:46:12","slug":"what-is-the-strait-of-hormuz-and-why-is-it-so-significant-in-the-israel-iran-conflict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207142\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Strait of Hormuz and why is it so significant in the Israel-Iran conflict?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      Hong Kong<br \/>\n      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8ib6z200kr27qjghkf3o30@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While there have been no major disruptions to the global oil supply so far, the attacks on Iran \u2013 by Israel and then the US \u2013 have rattled investors, sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/22\/business\/oil-futures-stocks-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oil futures soaring<\/a> by around 10%, among fears Iran could retaliate by disrupting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8kj5x7001n3b6pxyy86q7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From the perspective of the global economy, there are few places as strategically important. The waterway, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is only 21 miles wide at its narrowest point. It\u2019s the only way to ship crude from the oil-rich Persian Gulf to the rest of the world. Iran controls its northern side.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/screen-shot-2024-10-08-at-8-53-10-am-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2024-10-08 at 8.53.10 AM copy.jpg\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1820\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8jk8kz000m3b6ph0rzpfb5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 20 million barrels of oil, about one-fifth of daily global production, flow through the strait every day, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=65504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> the channel a \u201ccritical oil chokepoint.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx001z3b6pxhn7vclr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Sunday evening, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/israel-iran-conflict-06-22-25-intl-hnk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US airstrikes<\/a> on three of Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities, Brent crude, the global benchmark, briefly surged above $80 per barrel, according to Refinitiv data, the first time that\u2019s happened since January. Before the conflict, prices had largely hovered between $60 and $75 a barrel since August 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00203b6p9h3v6goc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brent last traded at $78.2 per barrel, while WTI, the US benchmark, was at $75.06.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00213b6puxhfq95d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whether oil prices will climb further now depends on Iran\u2019s response. Rob Thummel, senior portfolio manager at energy investment firm Tortoise Capital, <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.cnn.com\/cnn\/2025\/06\/17\/business\/israel-iran-oil-strait-of-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNN<\/a> that a potential disruption to the Iran-controlled sea route would cause oil prices to surge toward $100 per barrel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00223b6p1m34rnxc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A functioning Strait of Hormuz is \u201cabsolutely essential\u201d to the health of the global economy, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00233b6p8e646kmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A prominent adviser to Iran\u2019s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has already called for the closure of the Strait.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00243b6pj79yvcz8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFollowing America\u2019s attack on the Fordow nuclear installation, it is now our turn,\u201d warned Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor-in-chief of the hardline Kayhan newspaper, a well-known conservative voice who has previously identified himself as a \u201crepresentative\u201d for Khamenei.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00253b6pdnv02elw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Geographic leverage over global shipping gives Iran the \u201ccapacity to cause a shock in oil markets, drive up oil prices, drive inflation, collapse Trump\u2019s economic agenda,\u201d Mohammad Ali Shabani, an Iran expert and editor of the Amwaj news outlet, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8km3gx00263b6pwrsb1mec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When it comes to moving oil, the Strait is actually much narrower than its 21-mile official width. The navigable shipping lanes for massive supertankers are only about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/12\/28\/world\/meast\/iran-hormuz\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two miles wide<\/a> in each direction, requiring vessels to pass through both Iranian and Omani territorial waters.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8lhb6w00003b6pbk7fost4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>\ufeff<\/strong>But Vandana Hari, founder and CEO of Vanda Insights, which tracks energy markets, sees Iran\u2019s blocking of the Strait as a \u201cremote tail risk.\u201d The presence of a beefed-up US naval fleet in the region is both a deterrent and a response tool, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8licuh00043b6pnh703h0w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIran has a lot to lose and very little, if anything, to gain by attempting to close the Strait,\u201d Hari said. \u201cIran cannot afford to turn its oil-producing neighbors, who have been neutral or even sympathetic towards the Islamic Republic as it faced Israeli and US attacks, into enemies, any more than trigger the ire of its main crude market, China.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/ap25173431054459.jpg\" alt=\"Gas pumps at a Repsol gas station in Madrid, Spain, on Sunday.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1067\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8jk8kz000o3b6pip2obtit@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A closure of the Strait would be particularly detrimental to China and other<strong> <\/strong>Asian economies which rely on the crude oil and natural gas shipped through the waterway. The EIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=65504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> that 84% of the crude oil and 83% of the liquefied natural gas that moved through the Strait of Hormuz last year went to Asian markets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8ibby500003b6p6tcy9bjb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, sourced 5.4 million barrels per day through the Strait of Hormuz in the first quarter this year, while India and South Korea imported 2.1 million and 1.7 million barrels per day, respectively, according to the EIA\u2019s estimates. In comparison, the US and Europe imported just 400,000 and 500,000 barrels per day, respectively, in the same period, according to the EIA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8jowzh00193b6penwomogl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Sunday, India\u2019s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri sought to reassure jittery investors on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HardeepSPuri\/status\/1936816174236418202\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a> that the country has \u201cdiversified\u201d its oil supplies in the past few years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8jk8kz000q3b6p5fpjdwy9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Sunday, India\u2019s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HardeepSPuri\/status\/1936816174236418202\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a> that the country has \u201cdiversified\u201d its oil supplies in the past few years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc8jk8kz000r3b6poftfk6cp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now.
