Ex-British and Irish Lions hooker Brian Moore has explained his two \u201cfirmest conclusions\u201d from last Friday\u2019s loss to Argentina, while also leaping to the defence of the much-criticised Henry Pollock.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 20-year-old back-rower was called out by several fans for his missed tackle in the lead-up to the converted Santiago Cordero try. That slip gave Los Pumas the 28-24 lead<\/a> they held until the finish in Dublin.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the Australian tour\u2019s pre-departure match at the Aviva. Moore wrote in his latest Telegraph column<\/a>: \u201cAll concerned need to get a bit of perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realise the current fad is for hyperbole and instant judgment but one missed tackle by Henry Pollock<\/a>, which led to a brilliantly finished try for Argentina, does not mean Pollock has a weakness in that area.<\/p>\n

This has not played him out of contention for the Test squad any more than a later outstanding turnover has played him in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moore, who was a Test series winner in Australia on the 1989 Lions tour, went on to emphasise how the lack of the limited number of games before the series begins against the Wallabies<\/a> on July 19 presents a tricky scenario for players looking to impress head coach Andy Farrell.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstinct is to try and impress\u2026 but with that comes errors\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem for players and supporters comes from the fact there are so few games before the announcement of the first Test squad,\u201d he outlined.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherein lies the problem for the players when it comes to making their case in so short a time.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe instinct is to try and impress whenever the possibility arises, but with that comes errors.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are more likely to press a Test claim by doing your job solidly than attempting the improbable. In the maelstrom of a game, under pressure to make an instant decision, that is difficult to always remember.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe firmest conclusions you could draw from the Argentina loss are that Ellis Genge confirmed his growing reputation as a scrummager and ball carrier, and that Marcus Smith can play at full-back but that is not his best position. Beyond that, not much should be asserted with confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
