{"id":207710,"date":"2025-06-23T13:06:21","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207710\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T13:06:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T13:06:21","slug":"youre-a-second-class-citizen-arrests-club-raids-and-extremism-charges-define-lgbtq-life-in-russia-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207710\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018You\u2019re a Second-Class Citizen\u2019: Arrests, Club Raids and Extremism Charges Define LGBTQ+ Life in Russia in 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe world around you collapsed in a second and suddenly everything became unsafe \u2014 like you wake up one morning and they tell you that you\u2019re now a second-class citizen,\u201d one queer woman from St. Petersburg told The Moscow Times.<\/p>\n<p>Since Russia\u2019s Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnp.ru\/social\/dvizhenie-lgbt-priznali-v-rossii-ekstremistskim.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> the so-called \u201cinternational LGBT movement\u201d extremist 1.5 years ago despite no such formal movement existing, the country\u2019s queer community has been subjected to growing pressure, fear and repression.<\/p>\n<p>Under this sweeping designation, any public display of queerness \u2014 a rainbow badge, a photo with a same-sex partner, even a book \u2014 can be interpreted as extremist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hide my orientation, but hiding has become part of me. I\u2019m used to it,\u201d said a 24-year-old gay man from Moscow. Like all queer people who gave comments for this story, he spoke on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>All of the queer people who spoke to The Moscow Times said that the main problem is that the boundaries of what counts as illegal under the extremism declaration remain unclear, prompting many queer people to hide their sexuality altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a relationship, but outside of our [social messenger] chats and our home we\u2019re just friends,\u201d one gay man said, describing how many queer people live in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know what\u2019s allowed, what\u2019s forbidden or what punishment you might face,\u201d said the queer woman, 34, from St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you go to prison for 10 years over a picture on [social media VKontakte]? Or just get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2024\/02\/01\/russian-court-jails-woman-for-wearing-extremist-rainbow-earrings-a83938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fined for rainbow earrings<\/a>? Or will someone harass you on the street for holding hands with your girlfriend? Holding hands with a boyfriend could mean jail or death in jail. I have to force myself to adapt to a society that has no space for me,\u201d he said, referring to widespread reports of abuse and harassment against LGBTQ+ people in Russian prisons.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Russian courts handed down 146 fines for so-called \u201cgay propaganda,\u201d an offense first introduced in a 2013 law that has been expanded over the years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the extremist designation, Russian authorities have <a href=\"https:\/\/ovd.info\/2025\/01\/16\/lgbt-extremism-god\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opened<\/a> at least 12 criminal cases on charges related to LGBTQ+ activities, according to the independent rights watchdog OVD-Info. These charges are punishable by up to 12 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most tragic cases in the wave of prosecutions for \u201cLGBT extremism\u201d is that of 48-year-old Andrei Kotov, whose death in a pre-trial detention center raised serious concerns about the pressure faced by those accused under the anti-LGBTQ+ laws.<\/p>\n<p>Kotov was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/russian\/articles\/cj91v7gzmeno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> in Moscow in late December 2024 on charges of creating an extremist organization related to his alleged organization of \u201cgay tours.\u201d Authorities added him to the federal terrorists and extremists registry, allowing authorities to freeze their bank accounts without a court order.<\/p>\n<p>Before his death, Kotov said he had been beaten and tortured with an electric shocker in detention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer told the BBC\u2019s Russian service that Kotov \u201chad no idea\u201d his work could be considered extremism and that \u201che never managed to understand what exactly he was being accused of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another activity that could lead to jail could be going to a nightclub or organizing a party.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/jiroe-matia-rengel-b9kh72kOcdM-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"&#10;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9; &#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9; Jiroe (Matia Rengel) \/ unsplash&#9;&#9;&#9;&#9;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Jiroe (Matia Rengel) \/ unsplash<\/p>\n<p>The first criminal case for \u201corganizing an extremist community\u201d due to alleged LGBTQ+ affiliation was launched in March 2024. Vyacheslav Khasanov, the owner of the Pose nightclub in the city of Orenburg, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kommersant.ru\/doc\/6580810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> along with staff members Alexander Klimov and Diana Kamilyanova.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All three were also added to the federal registry of terrorists and extremists.<\/p>\n<p>In total, over 50 clubs allegedly associated with LGBTQ+ people or holding such events have been raided over the past year and a half under the pretext of fighting \u201cLGBT propaganda,\u201d said a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.currenttime.tv\/a\/ne-menee-51-reyda-proveli-siloviki-s-momenta-priznaniya-lgbtk-lyudey-v-rossii-ekstremistskim-dvizheniem-\/33424377.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calculation<\/a> by Current Time and the Sfera Foundation, which helps LGBTQ+ people in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Literature has also come under scrutiny. In recent weeks, at least three major publishing houses \u2014 Samokat, Ripol and Eksmo \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/russian\/articles\/czr8z15pv3jo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent<\/a> requests to booksellers to remove certain titles deemed to contain LGBTQ+ content from shelves, demanding either their return or destruction with written proof of disposal.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/ru\/tri-figuranta-dela-izdatelej-v-rf-otpravleny-pod-domasnij-arest\/a-72560473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a> three employees of the independent publisher Individuum, accusing them of publishing literature with LGBTQ+ themes and charging them with organizing an extremist organization\u2019s activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State repression has significantly worsened public attitudes toward LGBTQ+ individuals in families, schools, universities and workplaces, said Yan Dvorkin, the head of Center-T, an organization that supports transgender and non-binary people in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who were previously just transphobic or homophobic now feel empowered \u2014 to intimidate, blackmail and threaten others with administrative or even criminal prosecution,\u201d Dvorkin told The Moscow Times.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tnews<br \/>\n\t\t<a data-id=\"in-article-block\" class=\"related-article__inner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2025\/06\/23\/russian-man-arrested-for-organizing-lgbtq-tours-dies-in-police-custody\" title=\"Russian Man Arrested for Organizing LGBTQ+ Tours Dies in Police Custody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tRussian Man Arrested for Organizing LGBTQ+ Tours Dies in Police Custody<br \/>\n\t\t\tRead more<br \/>\n\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>LGBTQ+ Russians increasingly avoid disclosing their identity to doctors out of fear of discrimination. According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/comingoutspb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/doklad-vyhod-sfera-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by LGBTQ+ organizations Vyhod and Sfera, nearly one-third (29%) of LGBTQ+ respondents said they had avoided medical visits at least once in 2024 due to fear of bias. <\/p>\n<p>For transgender people, the figure is more than 50%. In 2023, Russia also banned gender-reassignment surgery and hormone therapy as part of the gender-transition process.<\/p>\n<p>One 17-year-old transgender girl from Tambov told Center T\u2019s discrimination monitoring team that a doctor refused to treat her because of her gender identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Olga, 18, from Kazan, said that during her gender transition, two complaints were filed against her at university due to her appearance \u2014 and that she was expelled as a result.<\/p>\n<p>While the risks faced by LGBTQ+ people remaining in Russia are difficult to define, at least 83% of respondents in the report said they feel endangered following the decision to label the \u201cinternational LGBT movement\u201d as extremist.<\/p>\n<p>For some, the current level of repression against their community has made emigration a near certainty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I leave Russia, it will be 100% because of the LGBT propaganda law,\u201d one gay person told The Moscow Times. \u201cEveryone I know is planning to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Dvorkin, LGBTQ+ people are \u201cincreasingly retreating from public life in response to the repression,\u201d which he said is leading to \u201cthe erasure of any mention, visibility or representation of LGBTQ+ people in the media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe fought so hard for that visibility,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s the only thing that offers protection. When you\u2019re visible, you exist \u2014 you can claim your space, your rights, your history,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening now is erasure and it\u2019s dragging us back into an era of fear and powerlessness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Message from The Moscow Times:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear readers,<\/p>\n<p>We are facing unprecedented challenges.
