{"id":207887,"date":"2025-06-23T14:38:08","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T14:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207887\/"},"modified":"2025-06-23T14:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T14:38:08","slug":"ukraines-path-to-alliance-still-irreversible-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/207887\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine\u2019s path to alliance still \u2018irreversible\u2019 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I can announce that now new estimates showing that our European and Canadian allies have stepped up, they will provide over \u20ac35 billion of additional security assistance to Ukraine for the year ahead,&#8221; the NATO chief said. <\/p>\n<p>Rutte said there was agreement within the alliance on the need to keep up support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the reason why, I think also last year in Washington, NATO allies agreed that for Ukraine, there is an irreversible path of Ukraine to enter NATO,\u201d Rutte told reporters. \u201cThat is still true today, and it will still be true on Thursday after this summit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During NATO\u2019s 2024 summit in Washington, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/07\/09\/ukraines-nato-membership-irreversible-00167011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the allies agreed<\/a> on the \u201cirreversible\u201d language for Ukraine\u2019s long-stalled bid, which has been a debate among member countries for nearly two decades. It\u2019s a sign that there is still support in the alliance for Ukraine\u2019s NATO membership, despite the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-vladimir-putin-stun-europe-peace-plan-ukraine-nato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strong public and private push<\/a> against Kyiv joining the alliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rutte said NATO\u2019s communiqu\u00e9 emerging from the summit would include \u201cimportant language\u201d tying the alliance\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nato-allies-defense-spending-goal-spain-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new pledge to spend 5 percent of  gross domestic product<\/a> on defense to support for Ukraine, but did not have specifics on how the new commitment would work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rutte said most of the commitment to deliver air defenses to Ukraine made by NATO at last year&#8217;s Washington summit had been sent to Kyiv, but more was needed.
