{"id":20823,"date":"2025-04-15T02:36:15","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T02:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/20823\/"},"modified":"2025-04-15T02:36:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T02:36:15","slug":"ukraine-says-russia-has-targeted-sumy-again-day-after-35-killed-in-the-city-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/20823\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine says Russia has targeted Sumy again day after 35 killed in the city | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">European Union leaders and Britain condemned the Palm Sunday attack on Sumy, while US President Donald Trump called it a \u2018mistake\u2019.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"95\" data-end=\"297\">Russian forces have intensified their assault on Ukraine\u2019s northeast, striking Sumy and other areas the day after one of the deadliest attacks in recent months killed 35 people in the city and sparked widespread condemnation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"567\">Ukraine\u2019s Air Force said on Monday evening on Telegram that Russian troops had fired a missile at Sumy. It did not immediately report any casualties or destruction. But within 20 minutes, it issued a second update warning that Russian warplanes were dropping guided bombs on the city.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"569\" data-end=\"724\">Earlier, Russian shelling in eastern Ukraine killed at least four civilians, authorities confirmed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"569\" data-end=\"724\">In the Kharkiv region, local officials said artillery and rockets struck the town of Kupiansk, a key railway hub briefly seized by Russian forces in 2022 and later recaptured by Ukraine. Overnight, Kharkiv \u2014 the country\u2019s second-largest city \u2014 was also hit by renewed drone attacks, highlighting Russia\u2019s sustained push to regain territory in the northeast<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"713\">Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said a 68-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman were killed in Monday\u2019s shelling while a rocket strike claimed the lives of a 77-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man.<\/p>\n<p>Trump says Sumy was Russian \u2018mistake\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1132\">The attacks follow Sunday\u2019s twin missile strike on the centre of Sumy, where Christian civilians had gathered to mark Palm Sunday before Easter.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"878\" data-end=\"1132\">Ukrainian officials said at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/4\/13\/dozens-of-dead-and-wounded-in-russian-strike-on-ukraines-sumy-zelenskyy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">35 people<\/a> were killed and more than 100 injured in the blast. Among the dead were two children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1428\">Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a deliberate targeting of civilians. He urged United States President Donald Trump in an interview on the CBS TV network\u2019s 60 Minutes news programme to \u201cplease, before any kind of decisions, any kind of forms of negotiations, come to see people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches, children destroyed or dead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1428\">Despite the heavy civilian toll, Trump, who has previously faced criticism for his perceived leniency towards Russia and its President Vladimir Putin, said he was \u201ctold they made a mistake\u201d\u00a0 regarding the Sumy attack.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1428\">Speaking again on Monday alongside El Salvador\u2019s President Nayib Bukele in the White House, Trump used the word \u201cmistake\u201d again and blamed Zelenskyy and former US President Joe Biden because they \u201callowed the war to happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Human shields\u2019 claim<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1853\">The Kremlin said it struck a military target, saying two Iskander-M tactical missiles hit a meeting of Ukrainian officers in Sumy. Moscow also blamed Kyiv for using civilians as \u201chuman shields\u201d without providing any evidence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1853\">Russia accused Ukraine of endangering civilians by carrying out military operations in urban areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1853\">According to Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence, the Sumy target was part of an operational command centre and the attack killed more than 60 Ukrainian soldiers. There has been no confirmation of that from Ukraine\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"2215\">Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on Monday urged Trump and his advisers to recognise that Putin is \u201cmocking their goodwill\u201d.
