The applicant attended her F-1 visa interview at a U.S. consulate earlier this month. She was asked standard questions, including why she chose her university, one recognised as prestigious by the visa officer, and about her current job role. At the conclusion of the interview, the officer informed her that her visa had been approved.

Relieved and excited, the student began preparations for her move to the U.S. However, after 10 days without receiving any further updates or documentation, she checked the U.S. Department of State’s CEAC (Consular Electronic Application Center) portal. To her shock, the portal indicated that her visa had been adjudicated and refused. The sudden reversal has left her and many others in the international student community both confused and concerned.

“This is really scary and so frustrating to go through,” said a friend who posted on her behalf in an online forum. “She was under the impression everything went well, only to find out days later that something changed behind the scenes.”

“Refused” doesn’t mean “rejected”

The Internet quickly reacted to the post. A user said, “A “refused” status on CEAC after an F1 interview approval typically means your case is undergoing administrative processing (221(g)). It’s not necessarily a denial, but probably indicates further review or additional information is needed before the visa can be issued. To be doubly sure, you can talk to an experienced licensed immigration attorney, but first start with asking your DSO.” Another added, “How does the text below the “Refused” line look? If there are 2-3 lines then it is refusal and she need to reapply. If there is a whole paragraph — she was put on AP.”

A netizen noted, “She will be approved My friend experience the same “Refused” doesn’t mean “rejected” or “denied” They just need to do some background checks. That’s all If the officer says approved and you’re not given a rejection letter or 221g form, then you will surely be approved. Especially if the passport was taken.” “Went through same. Interview on 2nd June 2025 – approved. On 10th June my status changed to refused. On 12th June received passport with 221g slip. Submitted required docs with 221g slip on 18th again and today i.e. on 23rd june status is issued!,” said a user.

An Indian student’s journey to study in the United States has taken a dramatic and distressing turn after…

[3161
36084,83561,3082,53,16,15,83564,49572,78886,83562,1236,83563
0":"post-208490","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-internet","8":"tag-f1-visa","9":"tag-f1-visa-rejection","10":"tag-internet","11":"tag-technology","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-us-f1-visa-news","15":"tag-us-travel","16":"tag-us-visa","17":"tag-us-visa-rejection","18":"tag-visa","19":"tag-visa-f1-rejection
["GET
