data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/debbie-webster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Debbie Webster<\/a> will be <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/25\/coronation-street-legend-die-40-years-debut-22059375\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written out of the soap<\/a> after being diagnosed with young onset dementia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last November, <strong>Metro<\/strong> was first to break news of the plot, with a source telling us it would be a \u2018devastating\u2019 watch for fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was met with <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/25\/devastated-fans-hit-coronation-street-iconic-characters-death-confirmed-22060770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a huge backlash from fans of the ITV soap<\/a>, with some even <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/29\/distraught-coronation-street-fans-launch-petition-save-icon-22087897\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">setting up an official petition<\/a> to save the beloved character.<\/p>\n<p>The months since have seen an increasing number of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/kate-brooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kate Brooks<\/a> called her into the office to tell her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She said we\u2019ve got this brilliant story, and we want to give Debbie dementia. And obviously, down the line, you don\u2019t survive dementia. So I knew that the story would eventually come to an end and my character would come to an end,\u2019 Sue explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There was a mixture of a lot of things. This was my first job when I was 16 and I left after a year and now it will be coming to an end again. But I also realised this was a really important story to tell and is a really fantastic opportunity to act.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/09_04_coro_debbie_02-211f.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22790619\" alt=\"Coronation Street's Debbie Webster looking shocked and concerned as she sits in a doctor's office.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tDebbie is shocked when she is referred for more tests (Picture: ITV)<\/p>\n<p>Sue also refutes some reports that she was \u2018furious\u2019 about the story, calling them \u2018completely untrue\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The only reason I was concerned about the storyline was because I wanted to be sure I could do it justice,\u2019 she insists. \u2018It is an honour and privilege to be given this sort of storyline.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sue first appeared as then 15-year-old Debbie 40 years ago and stayed for a year before making an unexpected comeback in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The actress says she has been surprised by the public\u2019s reaction to news of Debbie\u2019s latest storyline, explaining: \u2018It\u2019s really lovely that Debbie is loved. And I didn\u2019t realise what people thought of Debbie, they love Debbie and that\u2019s brilliant. But Debbie\u2019s not going anywhere yet. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Debbie has been diagnosed and this is her journey. The whole of the story is to see her journey, isn\u2019t it? To see this journey and tell it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Viewers read things like, oh yeah, they\u2019re killing Debbie off. Well, actually, it\u2019s amazing that they\u2019re giving Debbie this brilliant story.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tStatistics and facts about young-onset dementia\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"181\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_245840405-8145.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22825162\" alt=\"Dementia UK logo\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe charity offers support for those living with, or caring for people with dementia (Picture: Dementia UK)<\/p>\n<p>According to Dementia UK:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An estimated 7.5%, 70,800 of the estimated 944,000 people living with dementia in the UK have young onset dementia.<\/li>\n<li>Someone develops dementia every three minutes in the UK.<\/li>\n<li>One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime, whether that be through caring for a loved one with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.<\/li>\n<li>53% of people in the UK know someone who has dementia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Young-onset dementia support groups and help can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/information-and-support\/young-onset-dementia\/find-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Dementia UK website.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next week, fans will see her go to the doctors about her symptoms, believing they are due to the menopause. <\/p>\n<p>After discussing a series of recent incidents, shown as flashback scenes, including a black out and fall, the doctor advises her that he wants her to have further tests as he is concerned she is showing symptoms of early onset vascular dementia.<\/p>\n<p>Debbie then makes the heartbreaking decision to keep her anguish from her family, with Sue explaining: \u2018I think Debbie is in denial and wants to pretend everything is alright until it\u2019s not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She\u2019s a protector of her family, even though she doesn\u2019t have children. She doesn\u2019t want to worry them. It\u2019s like her world is being exploded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Also, people will treat you differently. She wants people to see her as the Debbie they know, the one who is in control and running a business. She\u2019s so vibrant and she\u2019s so full of life. But I think that is where a good story lies because it\u2019s somebody that has everything and also words are important to Debbie. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018She has a quick wit and everything is so important, money and success.
