{"id":209092,"date":"2025-06-24T01:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T01:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/209092\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T01:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T01:16:12","slug":"germanys-merz-says-no-reason-to-criticize-bombing-of-nuclear-sites-in-iran-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/209092\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany\u2019s Merz says \u2018no reason to criticize\u2019 bombing of nuclear sites in Iran \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>European leaders have since called on Iran to resume negotiations on the country&#8217;s nuclear program. &#8220;We will continue our joint diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and ensure the conflict does not intensify and spread further,&#8221; the leaders of Germany, the U.K. and France \u2014 known together as the E3 \u2014 said in a joint statement released Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>But during his remarks in Berlin on Monday, Merz also defended the U.S.&#8217;s entry into the conflict, saying he was \u201creasonably confident\u201d the war will not spiral into wider chaos, but added that predictions were difficult to make.<\/p>\n<p>A major risk, however, was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/iran-reportedly-moves-shut-strait-hormuz-us-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a critical global transit choke point, Merz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it were to be fought over, if it were to be closed, if it were to become too dangerous to pass through, then we could experience indirect consequences from this conflict that we cannot yet foresee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One reason the U.S. moved to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities is that Tehran had started to transport uranium from its nuclear sites, Merz also said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u00a0[Iran] was taking certain quantities of uranium out of the facilities and transporting it to other locations.
