Prince Harry<\/a> and Meghan caused outrage when they accused unnamed members of the Royal Family<\/a> of racism in their explosive interview with Oprah<\/a> Winfrey in 2021.<\/p>\n

Now, their wedding photographer has made his own accusations of racial prejudice against unnamed figures in the beauty industry.<\/p>\n

Alexi Lubomirski, who is white, claims that one senior magazine editor told him: \u2018Black girls don\u2019t carry high fashion.\u2019<\/p>\n

He says the Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong\u2019o first alerted him to the insidious issue of racism in showbusiness when he photographed her.<\/p>\n

\u2018She said to me, \u201cI really love these pictures. Can you make sure, when they\u2019re retouching the photos, they don\u2019t lighten my skin?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I said, \u201cYeah, of course\u201d. But I began to look at past shoots I\u2019d done with darker-skinned models and I noticed that there was a definite difference between the images I\u2019d submitted to magazines compared to the images that came out.<\/p>\n

\u2018When I looked through my archives, I also noticed how rarely I\u2019d been allowed to shoot different types of beauty, rather than just Caucasian girls.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lubomirski, 50, who also took the Duke and Duchess of Sussex\u2019s official engagement photos, is descended from Polish aristocracy. He says he was told that women of colour don\u2019t sell magazines.<\/p>\n

\u2018I would ask these editors-in-chiefs, and I\u2019d say, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you let me photograph dark-skinned girls on covers?\u201d. And they\u2019d say, \u201cIt comes down to economics, Alexi. We know that if we put a dark-skinned girl on the cover, we\u2019re going to sell 40 per cent less copies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018And I said, \u201cWhy do you think that is?\u201d They said, \u201cWell, probably because we don\u2019t put them on the cover that much\u201d, and I said, \u201cRight, exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Then one editor-in-chief told me, \u201cListen, Alexi, the fact is, dark-skinned girls and other ethnicity can\u2019t carry high fashion\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n

Alexi, who lives in New York with his wife and two sons, was recounting the story behind his decision to create his 2016 photobook, Diversity, featuring photos of mixed ethnicities.<\/p>\n

He says: \u2018I did end up losing a bunch of magazine jobs, because nobody wanted to have that conversation.<\/p>\n

\u2018They didn\u2019t want to be made to feel guilty about the fact that they were just putting Caucasian girls on the cover.\u2019<\/p>\n
