NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte insisted Monday that Ukraine would have the ears and full attention of the alliance leaders despite their members-only working session during the Hague summit, which will formally kick off today amid a geopolitical storm fueled by Iran tension.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s not forget, Iran is heavily involved in the fight of Russia against Ukraine by, for example, their drone deliveries, which are killing innocent Ukrainians every day, in cities, in communities, without any respect for life,\u201d Rutte said.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the two-day summit in the Netherlands, the NATO chief described Russia as the \u201cmost significant and direct threat\u201d the alliance faces, and highlighted the members\u2019 commitment in providing \u201cunwavering and persistent\u201d support to Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most significant and direct threat facing this Alliance remains the Russian Federation. Moscow continues to wage war against Ukraine with the support of North Korea, Iran, and China as well as Belarus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to take part in today\u2019s dinner and as Rutte put it, \u201cthere are other meetings scheduled for Zelensky at the summit,\u201d even though the doors remain shut to the members-only working meeting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

A relatively short summit statement has been drafted to ensure the meeting is not derailed by differences over details and wording<\/p>\n

He then announced: \u201cAnd we have \u2013 I can announce that now \u2013 new estimates showing that our European and Canadian Allies have stepped up and have already pledged \u2013 where we originally would have been able to announce a 20 billion over the first three months of this year, it is now they will provide over 35 billion euros (about $40B) of additional security assistance to Ukraine for the year ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NATO chief also highlighted that Ukraine\u2019s path to eventual NATO membership was ensured, and warned that any Russian attack on NATO would prompt a \u201cdevastating\u201d response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an irreversible path of Ukraine to NATO. That is still the truth today and it will still be true on Thursday after this summit,\u201d Rutte emphasized.US President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in the Netherlands tonight. This will be his first NATO meeting since being re-elected.<\/p>\n

As European allies hope to persuade Trump not to pull troops or US capabilities out of the continent \u2013 as he suggested in the past, – some members of the US delegation, including Senator\u00a0Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH),\u00a0co-chair of the Senate NATO observer group, stresses the significance of unity among the allies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to send the message that the Transatlantic Alliance is still united, that we are not going to be divided,\u201d she said during the Atlantic Council\u2019s NATO Summit kick-off reception in The Hague.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not going to be divided by Vladimir Putin, by what\u2019s happening in the Middle East, by what\u2019s happening in Ukraine, and all of our allies need to understand that, and so do our adversaries,\u201d\u00a0Shaheen emphasized.<\/p>\n
