Europe has been called the world\u2019s museum, but its record numbers of visitors have also made it ground zero for concerns about overtourism.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">In 2024, 747 million international travellers visited the continent, far outnumbering any other region in the world, according to the United Nations\u2019 World Tourism Barometer. Southern and western Europe welcomed more than 70 per cent of them.<\/p>\n<p>As the growing tide of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/lifestyle\/travel-leisure\/article\/3276329\/barcelona-portugal-japan-how-overtourism-causing-chaos-summer-2024?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">travellers strains housing, water<\/a> and the most Instagrammable hotspots in the region, protests and measures to lessen the effects of overtourism have proliferated.Among the factors driving the record numbers are cheap flights, social media, the ease of travel planning using <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, and what UN tourism officials call a strong economic outlook for many rich countries that send tourists despite some geopolitical and economic tensions.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An activist holds a banner that reads \u201cstop cruises\u201d as part of a march to demand measures against mass tourism in Mallorca, Spain, on June 15, 2025.
