It was developed for the Accell Group\u2019s Raleigh brand with help from VanMoof\u2019s cofounders, Ties and Taco Carlier, according to my sources. The announcement never mentions their involvement, which could be viewed as good or bad \u2014 good if you view the brothers as innovators, bad if you got burned during the VanMoof bankruptcy or the turmoil that preceded it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">I think everyone can agree, however, that the decision to put several functions behind monthly subscription tiers that start at \u00a36.99 \/ \u20ac7.99 (around $9) per month is annoying, especially for a list price of \u00a32,399 \/ \u20ac2,699 (around $3,000 USD) when Raleigh One sales begin next month in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. That\u2019s expensive for a Raleigh, but it\u2019s still close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bike-eu.com\/50105\/e-bike-sales-in-europe-see-further-cooling-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u20ac2,681 average<\/a> for European e-bikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The Raleigh One looks very VanMoof-ish but with several features that fans and critics alike have asked for: the 360Wh battery can be removed for easy charging, and it\u2019s fitted with a single-speed belt drive paired to a motor housed in the hub of the rear wheel. The integrated lighting adapts to conditions with a \u201cdual-front\u201d light that can be moved off the frame and onto the optional front rack. There\u2019s a simple controller on the bike to adjust power, which can also be set in the Raleigh app. The app lets riders tap into additional features like an integrated alarm system and GPS tracking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The bike weighs 21kg (46.3 pounds) and is only available in a single step-over frame model. It ships with a 5A brick that can charge the e-bike to 50 percent in one hour or to full in a fast 2 hours and 20 minutes. Range is estimated at 80km (50 miles) in eco mode or at 50km (31 miles) when adding more pedal-assisted power. This is Europe so there\u2019s no throttle here, and there\u2019s no button to provide a temporary boost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Unlike VanMoofs, the Raleigh One uses a lot of off-the-shelf parts. I\u2019m seeing hydraulic disc brakes from Tektro, a Gates Carbon belt, a 250W Mivice motor, and bike mount from SP Connect. \u201cBuilt to last and easy to maintain, the Raleigh One delivers on reliability, with high-quality and low maintenance parts, backed up by a comprehensive dealer network,\u201d the announcement promises. Those are important claims given the historical context.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"kqz8fh1\" Concerns that VanMoof\u2019s new owner \u2014 McLaren Applied \u2014 has addressed with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/hands-on\/684170\/vanmoofs-new-s6-e-bikes-fix-everything-but-trust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new S6 e-bikes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Now, about those subscriptions, or \u201cmemberships\u201d in Raleigh vernacular. The Basic tier provides a rider dashboard, basic security, a stolen mode, and updates over Bluetooth for free. You can then pay \u00a36.99 \/ \u20ac7.99 (around $9) per month, or \u00a384 \/ \u20ac96 ($110) per year, to become a Core member, which adds automatic stolen mode activation and smart maintenance alerts. And for a limited time, you\u2019ll also get over-the-air updates, some kind of bike-sharing feature for up to four people, \u201ctouch-and-go\u201d functionality, and remote arming \u2014 but only until those features are moved to a new, more expensive \u201cIcon\u201d tier sometime in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Subscriptions have become an unfortunate norm for just about everything we used to own outright, and e-bikes are no different. <a href=\"https:\/\/help.vanmoof.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/22244748210973-What-is-Ride-Pro#01JH343D1RHW4H93KHV419GE3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VanMoof is developing<\/a> its own \u20ac4.99 (about $6) per month or \u20ac49 ($57) per year subscription offering, and even industry heavyweight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/5\/24336198\/e-bike-battery-lock-bosch-anti-theft-date-ota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bosch<\/a> can\u2019t resist the lure of that recurring revenue stream as the industry continues to grapple with too much inventory and declining demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Raleigh\u2019s parent company, Accell \u2014 the bicycle giant responsible for brands like Batavus, Sparta, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/5\/26\/21269590\/carqon-cargo-bike-review-price-specs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carqon<\/a>, and Babboe \u2014 has suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bright.nl\/nieuws\/1177210\/fabrikant-van-fietsen-batavus-en-sparta-in-zwaar-weer-bijna-het-einde.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">financial<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accell-group.com\/en\/news\/news-2\/accell-reinforces-financial-stability-with-successful-closing-of-recapitalisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">troubles<\/a> of its own in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carqon.com\/nl\/klantenservice\/recall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babboe.co.uk\/recall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalls<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bike-eu.com\/48852\/dutch-investment-firm-acquires-bankrupt-e-bike-brand-stella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the bankruptcy of its Stella brand<\/a>. But unlike VanMoof, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/2\/24059456\/swedish-electric-motorbike-company-cake-files-for-bankruptcy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cake<\/a>, and many other mobility companies that have gone bust since the COVID-19 pandemic boom, Accell had the resources to survive the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/12\/24242678\/gocycle-crowdfunding-reboot-richard-thorpe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bikeaggedon<\/a>\u201d created by a sudden collapse of the supply chain followed by a period of massive oversupply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The Carlier brothers are undeniably trailblazers. They introduced sleek, desirable e-bikes to a category of transportation once dominated by bolt-on batteries and septuagenarians. But can they be trusted, even under Accell\u2019s tutelage, after bankrupting the company they founded 16 years ago?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Raleigh has also seen better days since its founding in 1887, its brand sullied by an embrace of mass-market retailers that push its lower-end bicycles.
