but a proposal for its future has been met with backlash<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2_Opening-Ceremony-Commonwealth-Games-Day-0.jpg\" alt=\"The opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at Alexander Stadium\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games at Alexander Stadium(Image: Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Birmingham\u2019s flagship Alexander Stadium is set to embark on a new chapter in its history despite hundreds signing a petition against a controversial proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/perry-barr\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Perry Barr<\/a> stadium was at the heart of the 2022 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/commonwealth-games\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonwealth Games<\/a>, hosting both the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the athletics competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The landmark venue is also set to play a pivotal role in hopes of delivering a lasting legacy from the event amid ambitions to put <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> on the world sporting map.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE: <\/strong><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/councils-75m-deal-privatise-flagship-31900142\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Council&#8217;s \u00a37.5m deal to &#8216;privatise&#8217; flagship Alexander Stadium sparks petition<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But a divisive plan to hand the running of the site to Birmingham Community Leisure Trust (BCLT) and its partners, Serco, until 2030 has sparked backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Resident Andrew Gulliver, who launched an online petition against the \u2018handover\u2019, argued that Alexander Stadium \u201cbelongs to Birmingham, not to Serco\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe Alexander Stadium site was built as a lasting legacy for our city,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt was promoted as a long-term benefit for the local community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The petition, which has been signed more than 1,000 times, added: \u201cWe are calling on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham City Council<\/a> to halt the planned handover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In a report published ahead of a cabinet meeting this week, the council said Alexander Stadium will be the city\u2019s \u201ckey facility\u201d for delivering international events as well as national and regional competitions for athletics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1_alex-stadPNG.png\" alt=\"Birmingham\u2019s Alexander Stadium\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/> Birmingham\u2019s Alexander Stadium(Image: Birmingham City Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt is therefore essential that the facility now transitions to its most efficient and effective operating model to capitalise on its investment,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The council has also said the stadium would remain in public ownership and run on its behalf by Birmingham Community Leisure Trust, which already operates nine of its leisure centres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It continued that the trust has a \u201cproven track record\u201d in improving public participation while lowering costs<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We have agreed to establish a gym user group with council and BCLT representatives to work through issues and concerns collaboratively,\u201d a spokesperson for the council added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The council report, which recommends that the cabinet approve the proposal, also states that it considered other options for the stadium, such as in-house management and establishing a new organisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE: <\/strong><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/news\/midlands-news\/birmingham-councillors-trade-barbs-over-31886166\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Birmingham councillors trade barbs over \u2018arrogant\u2019 vision for city as election tensions escalate<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, it was ultimately decided that the proposal from BCLT \u201cprovides the best opportunity to maximise an efficient and effective delivery model over the next five years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But the council has said there is set to be a detailed review of future options, including a full open tender, in 2030 when the stadium is more established.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The proposal will be considered by cabinet members at a meeting on Tuesday, June 24.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">What does the future hold for Alexander Stadium?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Ahead of hosting the European Athletics Championship next August, the council is optimistic that Alexander Stadium can continue to be a world-class venue and boost the city\u2019s reputation internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The stadium was previously revamped with more than \u00a370m of funding in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, before a &#8216;legacy package&#8217; of investment was approved by the cabinet in October 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This was underpinned by significant funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In total, an additional \u00a321.4m was allocated to extend and enhance the gym and leisure facilities, along with improvements to Perry Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The council just this month celebrated the completion of the legacy transformation project with an event at the stadium, which was attended by stakeholders, partners and Perry the Bull.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4_Closing-Ceremony-Commonwealth-Games-Day-11.jpg\" alt=\"Ozzy at the Commonwealth Games, last time he played Birmingham, in 2022\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Ozzy at the Commonwealth Games, last time he played Birmingham, in 2022(Image: Alex Pantling\/Getty Images))<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Improvements at the stadium include a new 120-station health and fitness suite, a new third generation artificial pitch for football and rugby, a new cycle studio and a refurbished indoors athletics hall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The permanent lighting arrangement in the main stadium has also been designed to \u201cfuture-proof future growth and the securing of other major televised events\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At Perry Park, the redevelopment work includes a replacement children\u2019s playground and new sports activation zone for the community, with new routes around the park and reservoir for running, walking and cycling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Mariam Khan, the council\u2019s cabinet member for health and social care, said the redevelopment cemented the stadium\u2019s position as a \u201cworld-class international sports venue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWith the European Athletics Championships arriving in 2026 and the UK Athletics Championship and English Schools Athletics Championships amongst other events taking place at Alexander Stadium this summer, it is an exciting time for sport in Birmingham,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Katie Sadleir, CEO at Commonwealth Sport, added that the stadium\u2019s transformation is an \u201cinspiring example of the continued legacy\u201d of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are proud to see this legacy come to life in Perry Barr and look forward to seeing the stadium thrive as a hub for sport, learning and community engagement for years to come,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Birmingham&#8217;s flagship stadium is set to host huge sporting events &#8211;
