PrykhodkoDreamstime)<\/p>\n<p>\nFrench engineer Systra has won a nine-year contract on France\u2019s biggest high-speed rail project: a 400km-long, Y-shaped line running south from Bordeaux and splitting to go southwest to the town of Dax and southeast to Toulouse.\n<\/p>\n<p>The \u20ac14bn first phase of the \u201cGrand Projet Ferroviaire du Sud-Ouest\u201d (GPSO) extends the Tours-Bordeaux high-speed route that opened in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>By 2032, when it\u2019s scheduled to be operating, the GPSO will cut travel times between the major cities in France\u2019s southwest amid population growth in the Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine regions.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll cut an hour off the 4h10 trip from Paris to Toulouse, and nearly an hour off the 2h01 journey between Bordeaux and Toulouse.<\/p>\n<p>A later phase will extend the eastern and western legs into Spain\u2019s Catalonia and Basque regions, cutting an hour off the 4h50 ride between Bordeaux and Barcelona, Systra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/en\/news\/systra-selected-by-sncf-reseau-for-the-new-southwest-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" \u20ac14bn cost of the first phase 40:40, with the EU chipping in the remaining 20%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gironde.gouv.fr\/Actions-de-l-Etat\/Transports-Navigation-et-securite-fluviale-Securite-routiere\/Transports\/Grand-Projet-Ferroviaire-du-Sud-Ouest-GPSO#:~:text=Le%20Grand%20Projet%20ferroviaire%20du,dans%20le%20Grand%20Sud%2DOuest.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a> the prefect of Occitanie region, the megaproject\u2019s coordinator<\/p>\n<p>The GPSO has been declared a public utility project.<\/p>\n<p>Systra will act as the general and technical project management assistant on behalf of French state rail operator SNCF.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a
