The talks were held in late April or early May, and were reported earlier by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-06-20\/meta-discussed-buying-perplexity-before-investing-in-scale-ai?srnd=phx-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/briefings\/meta-discussed-buying-safe-superintelligence-perplexity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Information<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9koczh00013b6mzdwdz74r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Separately, Apple internally discussed acquiring Perplexity, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-06-20\/apple-executives-have-held-internal-talks-about-buying-ai-startup-perplexity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>, which said the talks were in an early stage and may not result in a deal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9l4dya00073b6mvs1owl5o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The talks come as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/08\/tech\/apple-intelligence-ai-preview-wwdc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/10\/tech\/mark-zuckerberg-meta-superintelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a> are perceived to be behind on their AI products and services while competitors like Google and OpenAI charge ahead. The tech giants\u2019 interest underscores the fierce competition for AI talent in what some believe will be the next major evolution of the internet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza7500083b6mbxgrp4bj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jesse Dwyer, head of communications for Perplexity, declined to comment regarding the discussions with Meta. When asked about the internal Apple discussions, he said in an email to CNN: \u201cWe have no knowledge of any current or future M&amp;A discussions involving Perplexity.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9l2vtj00043b6myf5pckg6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple and Meta did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        What is Perplexity, and what does it do?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000b3b6mewujk6oj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perplexity is a search tool that uses AI models to parse web content and curate answers. Answers are usually posted as a summary, although Perplexity does provide links to its sources. The company was founded in August 2022 and launched the first iteration of its search engine in December 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000c3b6mk86v7b73@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perplexity offers two types of search modes: quick search and pro search. The former is intended for general search queries, while the latter will provide more detailed responses that require more digging and research. Perplexity\u2019s free tier allows three pro searches per day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000d3b6mow26ffxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perplexity began as a tool for <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/perplexity_ai\/status\/1600551871554338816?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">letting users interact with multiple AI models <\/a>from different companies in a familiar format: the search engine. But Perplexity can do a lot more than answer search queries. You can also ask questions about files, prompt it to handle projects (i.e. create a travel itinerary or make a playlist), create images and browse curated pages based on the topics you\u2019re interested in \u2013 much like ChatGPT and other AI services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000e3b6mvn28lemn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of those additional features, however, fall under Perplexity\u2019s paid tier, which costs $20 per month and provides access to more AI models, unlimited file uploads and image generation among other perks. Perplexity is also working on a web browser called Comet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000g3b6ml7h8dsgv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perplexity has become relatively popular, but it faces stiff competition, particularly from OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT, which was the most downloaded chatbot app in the third quarter of 2024, according to app data analysis firm <a href=\"https:\/\/sensortower.com\/blog\/chatgpt-maintains-us-lead-share-weakens-in-emerging-markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sensor Tower<\/a>. ChatGPT accounted for 45% of AI chatbot app downloads in that period, while Perplexity was included in the \u201cothers\u201d category.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000h3b6m9b7ninmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perplexity has also been caught in the middle of one of the biggest controversies surrounding AI: content use. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cy7ndgylzzmo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC<\/a> recently threatened to take legal action against Perplexity, claiming the tool copied its content without permission. Dow Jones, the parent company of The Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/21\/media\/rupert-murdoch-dow-jones-perplexity-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also sued Perplexity last year<\/a> over accusations that it used its content illegally, stealing traffic from their websites.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000j3b6mt1wtp29n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A deal with Perplexity would seemingly fit in with Apple\u2019s or Meta\u2019s AI ambitions. Both companies are incorporating AI into their most important products; for Apple, that\u2019s the iPhone, and for Meta, it\u2019s apps like Instagram and WhatsApp.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000k3b6mr8c8v0jm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple introduced updates to existing AI tools, like language translation and custom emoji creation, at its annual developers conference in June. The company is exploring infusing an AI-powered search engine into its Safari web browser, Apple\u2019s senior vice president of software and services, Eddy Cue, said in court testimony in May, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-07\/apple-working-to-move-to-ai-search-in-browser-amid-google-fallout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000m3b6mlrrf3aoi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Apple also<strong> <\/strong>has some catching up to do when it comes to AI. Its revamped version of Siri, announced more than a year ago, still doesn\u2019t have a release date.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000l3b6mncjhneun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Google currently pays Apple billions of dollars to be the default search engine in its Safari browser, which is the second most popular web browser behind Google\u2019s Chrome. But that deal is now under scrutiny as part of the Justice Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/05\/business\/google-loses-antitrust-lawsuit-doj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">search antitrust lawsuit<\/a> against Google \u2013 meaning Apple may have to think about alternatives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000n3b6mcepy9zvr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A deal with Perplexity, if one were to ever materialize, would give another boost to<strong> <\/strong>Apple\u2019s current apps and services while it continues working on Siri. The company already partners with OpenAI and Google for the iPhone\u2019s AI features.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000o3b6m0voq5i5x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cApple needs to be relevant here,\u201d Ben Bajarin, CEO and principal analyst of market research firm Creative Strategies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/03\/19\/tech\/apple-iphone-siri-delay\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CNN in March<\/a>. \u201cAnd the fact that they don\u2019t have a lot to show for their efforts is I think what gives most people the concern.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000p3b6mybsxuyax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta has been scrambling to attract top-tier AI talent, a testament to how crucial the company sees AI for its future. For example, Meta has offered pay packages as high as $100 million to some people as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s recruitment efforts, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/meta-ai-recruiting-mark-zuckerberg-5c231f75?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a recent interview on the \u201cUncapped\u201d podcast that Meta has offered $100 million signing bonuses to his employees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000s3b6m6paw82g4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meta also just made a major investment in Scale AI, a startup that offers tools to help companies label the data used to train AI models, that values it at <a href=\"https:\/\/scale.com\/blog\/scale-ai-announces-next-phase-of-company-evolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over $29 billion<\/a>. The social media giant hired Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang as part of the deal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000t3b6mjgnteott@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Meta has seem some success in AI \u2013 its Llama models are widely used by developers, and its Ray-Ban AI glasses are relatively popular \u2013 the company is said to be struggling in other areas. It reportedly delayed the rollout of its next flagship Llama model, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/meta-is-delaying-the-rollout-of-its-flagship-ai-model-f4b105f7?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAh63ckYIR6QbuaQE0vyMdlc9-KdoSbLmOA2pKhj7f0hPEA9KNBJkn0r&amp;gaa_ts=68599a23&amp;gaa_sig=yRXWnGYGI_j00N6vm81Uu9Xt-Yg7LZrCyCiHlSZGgUtJRyw7hMrVmG0vTkVWNR3XlBq31dCiM7iRW0OUXjq3ZQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, and its two-month-old standalone AI app raised privacy concerns after it was discovered that some user queries that were seemingly believed to be posted in private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2025\/06\/13\/meta-ai-privacy-users-chatbot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were actually public.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmc9hza75000v3b6mz0fmk3m9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/microsoft-ceo-says-ai-tidal-140007851.html?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHSNo8ICwkUG7RA3y0W9kAObDQGwMzZ3yRy2mRl6bJSoysSBTTtiMleRkPlOo6Vef_VPrvfTxhhG3c7M5j46kJN-eBGK5X7Dru4ypM5qQwqdFJZlH9Ync0pnIjvirKK7csqfT3s6gnULlmxZOvnpkcW1cX8RTpWGYDdFTE6ttWOf&amp;guccounter=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech giants<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/technology\/ai\/sundar-pichai-ai-action-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicting<\/a> AI could be as big a leap forward as the internet and the smartphone \u2013 two advancements<strong> <\/strong>that Meta and Apple<strong> <\/strong>played a major role in shaping.
