{"id":210427,"date":"2025-06-24T13:06:24","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/210427\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T13:06:24","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:06:24","slug":"winning-design-revealed-for-london-monument","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/210427\/","title":{"rendered":"Winning Design Revealed For London Monument"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in\u00a0May the government revealed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/the-shortlisted-designs-have-been-revealed-for-londons-queen-elizabeth-ii-national-memorial-and-you-can-have-your-say-050825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shortlist of designs<\/a>\u00a0for the incoming Queen Elizabeth II memorial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The brief was for architecture firms to create a memorial that was an \u2018emotionally powerful place and a space for pause and reflection\u2019, with a budget of up to\u00a0\u00a346 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now, after a public consultation, the winning architects have been chosen, and preliminary plans for the memorial have been unveiled.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrated architects Foster + Partners,\u00a0an international studio led by Lord Foster, have been chosen to build the monument for Queen Elizabeth II in St James\u2019 Park, next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/attractions\/buckingham-palace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buckingham Palace<\/a>.\u00a0The team also includes heritage specialists Purcell, French landscapers Michel Desvigne and post-colonial artist Yinka Shonibare. Foster + Partners are the same people behind the Gherkin and the Reichstag in Berlin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"d3dee97d-c8ff-0df9-a9a1-16c62cbf7452\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750770380_715_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Queen Elizabeth translucent bridge\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Image: Foster + Partners \" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106288807\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nImage: Foster + Partners&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Key features of the design will include: a silver statue of Elizabeth riding a horse in a newly created public space called\u00a0Queen Elizabeth II Place\u00a0by Marlborough Gate; a translucent glass bridge, inspired by the tiara worn by the late Queen on her wedding day; a\u00a0Prince Philip Gate on Birdcage Walk, with a statue of the Queen and Prince Philip; and an amorphous gold sculpture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lord Foster described his design as \u2018very light touch\u2019, to reflect how the Queen was as a monarch. He said: \u2018The Queen encompassed, historically, periods of significant change, socially and technologically, but it was all very much with a light touch, and that light touch, the feeling should be that if you visit St James&#8217;s Park and the site in question later, it will still feel very familiar.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"a4320ddf-af01-e76c-0c65-d0fa86bf8fed\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1750770383_361_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Modern gold sculpture \" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Image: Foster + Partners \" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106288808\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nImage: Foster + Partners&#13;<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018At the heart of our masterplan is a translucent bridge symbolic of Her Majesty as a unifying force, bringing together nations, countries, the Commonwealth, charities and the armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The memorial is gentler, quieter, more contemplative, and an opportunity to rediscover, or perhaps for some to discover, the legacy of Her Majesty.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The designs are still subject to change.
