{"id":210449,"date":"2025-06-24T13:17:17","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:17:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/210449\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T13:17:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T13:17:17","slug":"us-congressmen-urge-trump-administration-to-continue-critical-aukus-submarine-deal-to-secure-indo-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/210449\/","title":{"rendered":"US congressmen urge Trump administration to continue &#8216;critical&#8217; AUKUS submarine deal to secure Indo-Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">US politicians who have championed AUKUS have stepped up lobbying efforts with the Trump administration, saying the defence technology pact is &#8220;critical&#8221; to deterring &#8220;Chinese aggression&#8221; and urging the White House not to dump it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Trump administration said earlier this month it would conduct a 30-day review of AUKUS, with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth telling Congress last week his department would &#8220;make sure it fits the priorities of the president and that our defence and shipbuilding industrial base can support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The federal government has played down the impact of the review, saying it was confident the White House would continue to endorse the initiative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Five US congressmen who sit on multiple influential house defence committees have now written to the defense secretary to declare their support for AUKUS, saying it was a &#8220;critical mission&#8221; to &#8220;deter Chinese aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Donald Trump speaks sitting in the Oval Office.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/67019aa8f976773292ac07d0f8a7f85f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Trump administration said in May it would review the submarine deal it had with Australia and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>US wants Australia to step up<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The senior Pentagon official conducting the review, Elbridge Colby, has previously said the US will only be able to sell at least three Virginia-class nuclear submarines to Australia under AUKUS <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-12\/marles-downplays-trump-review-of-aukus\/105406896\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105406896\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">if it succeeds in rapidly lifting its rate<\/a> of submarine production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australia has committed $3 billion to help bolster America&#8217;s submarine industrial base under AUKUS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The five congressmen \u2014 including Republican and House Armed Services Committee chair Mike Rogers as well as Democrats Joe Courtney and Adam Smith \u2014 said in their letter that they were &#8220;confident in our ability to meet both US fleet requirements and our AUKUS commitments.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A submarine rests in a dock, crews of people walking on its surface, and an American flag planted at its bow.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/479464892d9dba39ddda60e1bec2b457\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Virginia-class attack submarines are currently produced at a rate of about two a year. (US Department of Defense)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The politicians said additional funding commitments from Congress, on top of Australia&#8217;s payments, have allowed US shipyards to ramp up steel fabrication and increase construction pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Shipbuilders delivered two attack submarines in 2024 (USS New Jersey and USS Iowa), with two more slated for delivery in 2025 (USS Massachusetts and USS Idaho), and another two in 2026,&#8221; they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They argued that increasing capacity would &#8220;open a pathway to selling the Virginia-class submarines to Australia in 2032, 2035, and 2038&#8221;, as planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The congressmen also talked up progress on skills, saying &#8220;over 120&#8243; Australian sailors and officers were currently completing joint nuclear submarine training, with other Australian sailors already joint-crewing US Virginia-class submarines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marles &#8216;confident&#8217; Australia can deliver<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The letter comes as AUKUS supporters in both the Senate and Congress \u2014 as well as Australian officials \u2014 intensify efforts to reassure senior Trump administration officials that it should stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Late last week, Democrat Senator Tim Kaine and Republican Senator Pete Ricketts <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaine.senate.gov\/press-releases\/kaine-and-ricketts-introduce-bipartisan-aukus-improvement-act\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced a bipartisan bill <\/a>aimed at strengthening AUKUS by &#8220;streamlining defence industrial base collaboration&#8221; and exempting Australia and the UK from congressional notification for overseas manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Defence Minister Richard Marles discussed AUKUS during talks with his UK counterpart John Healy in London ahead of his visit to the NATO meeting in the Hague.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Richard Marles sitting at a table smiling \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/e7aff470506207a72686f055480c9874\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Richard Marles says there was a lot of work to do in building a skilled workforce, but he was &#8220;confident&#8221; Australia would deliver.
