{"id":211185,"date":"2025-06-24T19:33:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-24T19:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/211185\/"},"modified":"2025-06-24T19:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-24T19:33:09","slug":"google-could-face-new-search-oversight-from-uk-watchdog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/211185\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Could Face New Search Oversight From UK Watchdog"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The potential changes comes as the country\u2019s antitrust regulator, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/competition-and-markets-authority\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Competition and Markets Authority<\/a> (CMA), <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-takes-first-steps-to-improve-competition-in-search-services-in-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Tuesday (June 24) said it is weighing a proposal that would give Google \u201cstrategic market status,\u201d a designation under new competition rules for tech companies that hold higher levels of power in their markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle is the world\u2019s leading search tool and plays an important role in all our lives, with the average person in the UK making 5 to 10 searches a day,\u201d <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarah-cardell-756b34228\/?originalSubdomain=uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Cardell<\/a>, chief executive of the CMA, said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is equally critical for over 200,000 UK businesses which rely on Google to reach their customers. Google search has delivered tremendous benefits \u2014 but our investigation so far suggests there are ways to make these markets more open, competitive and innovative,\u201d Cardell added.<\/p>\n<p>The CMA said its investigation has found concerns about Google, including a complaint that its index of billions of websites, its access to trillions of historical searches, and its information ecosystem of information, are difficult for others to replicate.<\/p>\n<p>The regulator also heard concerns about higher costs of search advertising than would be found in a more competitive market, as well as \u201climited transparency and fairness in how Google ranks and presents search results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the CMA was given added <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/antitrust\/2025\/google-search-business-faces-united-kingdom-antitrust-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competition and merger control<\/a> powers under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, which lets the watchdog enforce consumer protections on tech giants and take action like levying fines of up to 10% of global annual revenues for violations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CMA announcement, the regulator has proposed a list of measures for Google if the strategic market status designation goes forward.
