WHEN Molly Kochan was diagnosed with incurable cancer aged 42, she wanted to make the best of the time she had left.<\/p>\n

While most people might draw up a bucket list of travel, skydiving or swimming with sharks<\/a>, Molly had an altogether different idea \u2014 to have sex<\/a> with as many men as she could.<\/p>\n

She dumped her husband of 15 years and went on a sexual odyssey, sleeping with more than 189 men including a Ryan Reynolds<\/a> lookalike, a mortician wearing clown make-up and a lover with a foot fetish.<\/p>\n

Molly recorded her adventures in a podcast called Dying For Sex. Now, it has been turned into a TV miniseries which kicks off tonight, with five-time Oscar<\/a> nominee Michelle Williams<\/a> in the central role.<\/p>\n

Comic Rob Delaney plays Molly\u2019s neighbour who brings out her inner dominatrix by asking her to kick him in the testicles while wearing a pair of high heels.<\/p>\n

Molly died in 2019, aged 45, but never regretted her choices saying: \u201cSex makes me feel alive, and it\u2019s a great distraction from being sick.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I would do any of this stuff without the cancer. Even though I\u2019d maybe want to, I\u2019d be a little more cautious about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michelle, 44, said playing Molly had its challenges \u2014 not least faking six orgasms in a row.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cYou\u2019ve already done, like, four scenes, and then it\u2019s five o\u2019clock at night and you have to do six masturbation <\/a>sequences with six sculpted, individual orgasms, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Woo! OK!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Opened my eyes\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Brokeback Mountain star said the series \u201cdefinitely opened my eyes in a way that was also like, \u2018God, I\u2019m such a dummy for not having realised this stuff sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly went to the doctor with a lump in her breast when she was 33 but was told she was too young to have cancer.<\/p>\n

Six years later she was diagnosed with breast cancer<\/a> that had spread to her lymph nodes.<\/p>\n

If I had access to more information on breast health when I was younger, I may have caught my symptoms earlier<\/p>\n

Gruelling chemotherapy, radiation treatment<\/a> and a double mastectomy left her infertile but alive.<\/p>\n

But, in 2015, she started suffering hip pain and underwent further tests which revealed the cancer had metastasised and was now in her bones, brain and liver.<\/p>\n

In other words, it was terminal.<\/p>\n

She would always say sex felt like the antithesis to death. Being physically on fire made her feel alive.<\/p>\n

Molly was in \u00adcouple\u2019s counselling with her \u00adhusband when she received the \u00addevastating call from her \u00admedics.<\/p>\n

She ended her marriage<\/a> six months later to \u201cseek joy\u201d.<\/p>\n

By her side through it all was best friend Nikki Boyer and the pair hit upon an idea for a podcast in 2018 after they met for lunch one day and Molly had already been on two dates and had kissed a stranger in Dunkin\u2019 Donuts.<\/p>\n

The Dying For Sex<\/a> recordings between the friends, released a year after Molly\u2019s death, have been downloaded an incredible five million times and chart Molly\u2019s hilarious sex-scapades as well as her journey through ill health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nikki told The Times: \u201cI don\u2019t think she had a clue how profoundly it was going to land in the world. She would always say sex felt like the antithesis to death.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing physically on fire made her feel alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

I literally wanted to hump everyone and everything that I saw. I was horny all of the time. I felt like a teenager.<\/p>\n

Molly<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Molly\u2019s sexual urges were fuelled by menopausal hormones which were expected to dampen her desire but had the opposite effect, making her feel \u201chorny all the time\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI literally wanted to hump everyone and everything that I saw. I was horny all of the time. I felt like a teenager again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before leaving her marriage, Molly tried to save their relationship, embarking on \u201cvirtual affairs\u201d as she started posting sexy selfies on a dating<\/a> app.<\/p>\n

But the union fell apart and Nikki claims that after Molly told her \u00adhusband, a waiter, during their therapy session that her cancer had returned, he said: \u201cCan I get back to why I\u2019m so angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly said of her marriage: \u00ad\u201cSexually, we had difficulties before cancer came along.<\/p>\n

Raunchy hook-ups<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI had spent a really long time pushing him away because of my own issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight before I got diagnosed, I was kind of looking to recharge our sex life and then the cancer showed up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly’s wild journey began with a quest for pleasure – but ended in a search for something deeper, says her friend NikkiCredit: Instagram<\/p>\n

So began a number of raunchy hook-ups as Molly posted lingerie shots of herself on dating apps<\/a> and locked eyes with strangers.<\/p>\n

Nikki and Molly counted liaisons with 183 men before giving up. She reveals in her podcast how she threw caution to the wind, inviting men to her home, saying: \u201cWhat are you going to do to me? Kill me? I\u2019m dying\u201d.<\/p>\n

Molly also wrote a memoir called Screw Cancer: Becoming Whole, in which she wrote: \u201cWhenever my health scares escalated, so did my sexual adventures. It was a way to trump the distraction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nikki said: \u201cMolly was just so open. There was one guy that wanted to be in a cage in her house like a dog. Molly said \u2018I\u2019m so interested in learning why.\u2019 I said \u2018What the f***?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve done any and all number of sexual experiences in my 30 year career, but I\u2019ve never masturbated on film before and I was nervous.<\/p>\n

Nikki said Molly would never date a married man as \u201cshe didn\u2019t want any part of that\u201d.<\/p>\n

Michelle has told how Molly\u2019s story had a profound impact on her and left her in tears as she researched the role.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI\u2019m not a crier. Things don\u2019t get to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thick skinned. I\u2019m savvy. It takes a lot to break through that.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I had that reaction to that podcast I thought, \u2018Well, I\u2019m sunk. Whatever this thing is, I\u2019ve already emotionally signed on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michelle said writer Liz Meriwether pushed her to the limit with some of the scenes, despite her being an experienced Hollywood<\/a> actress. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done any and all number of sexual experiences in my 30-year career,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019ve never masturbated on film<\/a> before and I was nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s much easier to portray mutual desire than just the desire for oneself.<\/p>\n

Being abused, aged seven<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBut God, when Liz wrote those scenes when Molly\u2019s alone in the hotel and by the end she\u2019s masturbating to anything, masturbating to a goldfish bowl, I thought \u2018Liz, you\u2019ve really done it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Dying for Sex is primarily about Molly\u2019s hunt to have an orgasm for the first time, pal Nikki says that by the end, her friend was looking for something more meaningful.<\/p>\n

Molly wrote before her death: \u201cI wish I could cap off the whirlwind hospital story with an amazing tale about a guy who swept me off my feet and made me blush, but my \u00advisitor never showed up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI realise I did get to fall in love. I am in love. With me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nikki says sex was also a way for Molly to regain agency over her body after being abused by a boyfriend of her mum when she was just seven.<\/p>\n

Nikki, who is played by It Ends With Us actress Jenny Slate, said she hoped Molly\u2019s story would inspire \u201cpeople to nurture their relationships\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cPeople can think all day about what they would do, but you never know what life will throw at you and how you will react.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s on your bucket list? What do you want to live for?\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly also left a poignant message in a blog post movingly entitled I Have Died.<\/p>\n

She wrote: \u201cSo many people who die, specifically of cancer it seems, write viral letters about embracing life.<\/p>\n

\u201cEat an avocado a day. Tell your mean neighbour his lawn looks nice. Don\u2019t hesitate, quit your job, go to Bora Bora\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have those kinds of life lessons to share. I know what I did at the end of my life. I know what brought me joy. But that would surely not affect you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now it seems Molly\u2019s life will have a bigger impact than she could ever have imagined.<\/p>\n
