(Reuters: Darrin Zammit Lupi)<\/p>\n<p>Are Australians avoiding the US?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Yes, according to the US International Trade Administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Their latest data shows Australian visitor numbers plummeted 7 per cent in March this year, compared to March 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That&#8217;s the sharpest drop in Australian visitors the US has seen since March 2021, during the height of the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Jared Mondschein, director of research at the United States Studies Centre,\u00a0says more Australians are wary of heading to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure how much this is founded on fact, but nonetheless, there are definitely Australians who are concerned,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tourists shield themselves in Times Square\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/7b6844f27d639975199a86b08b972325\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">One expert says it&#8217;s increasingly difficult for travellers to predict whether they&#8217;ll be granted entry into the US. (Reuters: Andrew Kelly)<\/p>\n<p>What about the rest of the world?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Australians are not the only people avoiding the US in the wake of Donald Trump&#8217;s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/i-94-arrivals-program?anchor=content-node-t14-field-lp-region-2-1\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data from the International Trade Administration<\/a>, which counts visits of one night or more, has also shown big slumps in visitor numbers from other countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In March, overseas arrivals to the US plunged 11.6 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s a far cry from what was initially predicted for this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tourism Economics&#8217; <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tourismeconomics.com\/press\/latest-research\/escalating-trade-war-threatens-us-travel-sector\/\" data-component=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inbound US travel forecast<\/a> projected an 8.8 per cent growth this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, it&#8217;s warning of a 5.1 per cent decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It says this is largely due to &#8220;tariff-induced&#8221; exchange rate shifts and strained diplomatic relations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tourists in front of the Lincoln Memorial\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/7787b62ef57c63f576776bd481bb0b52\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The United States is the third-most-visited country in the world.
