{"id":21399,"date":"2025-04-15T07:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T07:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/21399\/"},"modified":"2025-04-15T07:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T07:35:09","slug":"he-is-the-american-player-who-john-mcenroe-once-claimed-would-reach-the-top-10-but-he-never-got-there-before-retiring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/21399\/","title":{"rendered":"He is the American player who John McEnroe once claimed would reach the top 10 but he never got there before retiring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>John McEnroe seeked out this ATP player to be the next star of American tennis<\/strong> <strong>back in 2011.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There has not been an American men\u2019s singles Grand Slam champion in over 21 years, with the last coming when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/features\/what-andy-roddick-admitted-really-confused-him-after-he-won-the-us-open-title-in-2003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andy Roddick won the 2003 US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The closest that drought has come to ending is last year, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/jannik-sinner-makes-prediction-about-taylor-fritz-after-the-us-open-final-that-hes-absolutely-certain-will-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taylor Fritz reached the US Open final<\/a> before losing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jannik-sinner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jannik Sinner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/taylor-fritz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fritz<\/a> came on the scene, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/john-mcenroe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McEnroe<\/a> picked out a young <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP<\/a> player that he thought could be a potential contender at the top of the sport.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Photo by Morne de Klerk\/Getty Images\" width=\"594\" height=\"453\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-108018942.jpg\" \/>Photo by Morne de Klerk\/Getty ImagesJohn McEnroe claimed Ryan Harrison would reach the ATP top 10<\/p>\n<p>On April 14 2008, 15-year-old Ryan Harrison would make his ATP main draw debut after qualifying for the U.S. Men\u2019s Clay Court Championships in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>Ranked 1277 in the world at the time, Harrison would cause a big shock and beat world number 95 Pablo Cuevas, 6-4 6-3.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"718\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-577139190-1024x718.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Aaron M. He\u2019s going to get up there.
